As a guy who loves his recruiting, there obviously is a lot more to it, but yeah. I would throw in East Texas more specifically, because that's an area we really need to focus on for a lot of reasons. Mainly that the exposure is much less out there, which should work to this program's advantage, geographically.

Side note: our recruiting class ranking is down to 146th in the country. There are 128 FBS programs, which we are apparently dead last in right now.

They don't have to learn/know how to recruit Texas.  If you can just recruit period and are a good coach that can sell your ideas and the program then I could really care less where you're coming from.  I just want the best possible candidate coming here.  It's not hard to recruit Texas because there's a plethora of players and talent here.  It's having a good system in place and learning how to develop players to create a consistency of winning.

how about being innovative and fun to play for.  still maintain standards for behavior and grades, but be willing to let loose and have some fun....but more importantly, be willing to give change a chance when something is not working over and over again.  Screw Mac.  Screw Rick.

a coach that does not come in and bitch about how hard it is to recruit in a new stadium, overpaid staff, and cushy $500k+ salary with a losing career record

Are you old enough to remember Lenny Bruce? He would have said " Screw Mac. Screw Rick... That's NICE man...NICE! If you want to insult someone, say UNscrew you!".

At this point, a coach who wasn't under Hayden Fry.

Sorry, I don't care about what you did under Hayden Fry. Have you won on your own? No? Then don't come here.

It's funny when I used to see McCarney standing on the sidelines doing nothing, not even standing close to the huddles during timeouts, etc, I used to think maybe he was doing something behind the scenes (like recruiting).  But since he clearly is not doing that, I really question what it is he actually does.

Well, we will have a few years to compile a list of who can take Mac's place, so I'd venture to guess that there will be a coach in the FCS ranks or Division II that will be interested in coming here. Again, I'd go the head coach at a lower division over a coordinator at some P5 money rich program.

I'd look at whoever is the head coach at the best Texas/Louisiana FCS or Division II team, who also is younger than 50, and likes the forward pass. Just my $.02...

Of course, assuming RV is still the AD, I won't really be paying attention by then, so I guess it won't matter...

UNT gets ZERO respect in the DFW area. A coach who can recruit OUTSIDE of Texas is big thing, IMO. Also, a coach who has a track record of success with little resources.

Turner Gill.

Let's just look past his Kansas stint. too much pressure to win there compared to good ol' little North Texas.

Dos he coach basketball at Kansas?

If not, then I doubt there was an undue amount of pressure to win.
