This is such a misleading statement, because IMO it implies some kind of age/generational effect.  I don't think the game has passed Mac by, I think it is more accurate to say Mac turns a blind eye to the necessary changes.

It implies that Mac has a dated mindset, and refuses to embrace the modern philosophies coached at winning programs. I could care less about his age. His coaching philosophy worked years ago, but not today. Certainly not at G5 programs that lack the top tier talent the P5s enjoy.

Mac is one year younger than Nick Saban... obviously it has to do with more than age.

Probably right, but I'd like to see what Smith can do with a full week of 1st team practice reps and starting and playing a whole game.

Why not give Smith those first team reps during the bi week.  Oh, wait!  Can't do that can we.  Smith take a seat at the end of the bench with the other six scholarship QBs that were recruited.  Andy Mac has this covered.

Smith's arm strength is obvious. But what I saw of him, he looked like he needs to get his sea legs under him. Reps. Reps. Reps.

That McNulty looks good against THIS defense is not that surprising. That Smith doesn't is. With all due respect to a banged up, short-handed defense.
