Here is where we stack up vs. the rest of the country right now.  In the grand scheme of things, SMU and Rice are not world beaters.  And with offenses on the horizon like Marshall, WKU, LaTech, and Tennessee, it's hard to stay optimistic.

4th Down Pct Conversion Defense - 15th in the nation!  Woo hoo!  *sigh*

Just a guess. A couple of times some team didn't move the chains on third down and f'd up on fourth.

Here are 2 articles about tempo/pace:

As of 3 games into 2015, this is what I come up with:

  • SUM 70:35 TOP
  • SUM 245 offensive snaps

If you go by these numbers, our offensive snaps the ball to the pace of 3.47 plays/minute, or 17.29 seconds/play.  If that is correct, we are playing very uptempo.  That is to say, we are getting to 4th and punt really, really fast.

I would also keep an eye out on this site for when the start posting FEI ratings.

I would wager that the number of 3 and punt series are down this year.

Personally, I think our tempo has worked except that we throw too many incomplete passes and passes to the sideline that stop the clock and makes the TOP worse that it actually is.  A completion percentage in the 60-65% range and a QB who is not afraid to throw the ball in the middle of the field would have a big impact on TOP.

A contributing reason the opposing offenses have had the ball so long is that our defense has given up too many long drives, and they have done this early in games.  In the smoo game they let them drive deep into our territory on multiple occasions and were bailed out by missed FG and fumble.

I think it is incorrect to blame the offensive scheme so far.  If you look inside the numbers I believe it shows improvement.  9 turnovers in 3 games (plus 3 more fumbles we recovered) is an absolute killer for your offense.  I don't blame the turnovers on the tempo.  IMHO.

Time of possession is the most telling.

I don't know.....Third Down Conversion Pct Defense is pretty bad.

And it seems to me that all that our "uptempo offense" has done is apply more negative pressure on an already weak defense.  That idea has completely backfired on us IMO.

So you're saying when you recruit at about 110 level every year you get about 110 level results?

Yup. You can either protect your defense, by using clock and keep them off the field or you can help them by scoring a lot of points. We are doing neither so we are failing.

I'm glad to know that the stats back up what our eyeballs are seeing--we suck so bad right now...and we haven't even played the really good teams on the schedule yet. After WKU, La Tech, Marshall, Tennessee, and MUTS get done with us, its very possible that we will be dead-ass last in almost every one of those stats, defensively

I haven't even looked at that stat and I am not surprised to read this.  Based on what game time I've actually seen, we were awful when it comes to moving AT ALL on first and second downs.  The offense faces so many 3rd and longs, it is no wonder that the conversion rate is the suck.

I miss this man. He would've never let this three and out uptempo bs fly. It only works if you can complete every pass or your quarterback is a legit threat to run every down.
