(I thought I would share a story, that cheered me up in the wake of this Mean Green Great Depression football season.)

So I went to the Texas State Fair this last weekend, and I decided to throw on a North Texas shirt for the day. I had over 10 people yell to me Go Mean Green, throw up the claw, and chant caw! caw! when they saw me.

But... probably one of my most proudest Mean Green moments was meeting this older gentleman operating the ferris wheel. As I was exiting the ferris wheel cage, he stopped me and was asking me if I graduated or was a student. After I told him I graduated there, he then explained to me that he had a good friend that played for North Texas football a while ago. He said that he was good enough to go on and play in the NFL. I didn't ever catch the players name from the guy, but he said that he has always liked UNT, despite never attending or really stepping foot on campus.

If we don't have a good community support in Denton, I would say that Dallas is definitely a place that UNT holds a strong support. I was pretty proud that day, and I thoroughly enjoyed throwing up the claw all day.

Nice. We're all over the freaking Metroplex, and if we could only win with some kind of consistency this giant just might wake up. Frustrating.

That's awesome! A couple months back I was traveling through Love Field and had multiple TSA agents show support for the Mean Green. Probably one of the few times I enjoyed the "TSA experience."

I do agree, with some consistent winning, the beast is bound to be awoken.

I agree with you all too. I know we have everything set up for us to become a T-shirt fan base and have the fan presence big 12 teams have around this part of the country. But the biggest factor right now is our lacking in the athletic representation.

Think about it.. TCU has a student population of a little over 10,000 and a small alumni population. UNT has over 37,000 students and an DFW alumni population of over 250k. We have all the ingredients... Yet we have a lot to change to get the other important ingredient.

I like the way you think.  And I agree wholeheartedly.  If we can ever win and win consistently it will be amazing because we will have fans coming out of the woodwork.  We honestly have not ever won consistently other than Odua Mitchell, Hayden Fry and the Dickey 4 year run and of course Mac in 2013.  As I have stated before I would like to see us with a marquee win as well because that will only speed up the process.

I do not buy into the Vito theory of "it's North Texas, what do you expect." Although historically he is right.

We have never had all of the pieces in place like we do now.  Facilities, coaching salaries, enrollment growth.  We are getting a very low ROI.  And that is what causes the angst the frustration.

Exactly, but I would like to add that it is going to be a few years (and this has to be winning years) to build the momentum. One could argue that we are battling for DFW support between TCU, SMU, and UT/OU fan take over. And this makes an up hill battle for UNT. But UNT has the numbers, and we are progressing into a new era of college fandom. Its not like the oldy days where you were either a UT, A&M, or OU fan, and that was as plain and simple as it got. We are seeing up and coming teams take a piece of the cake with fandom.

only way this story gets better is if the Ferris wheel operator graduated from SMU.

I'm pretty sure the guy shoveling pony poo in the stables graduated from SMU. I can tell because he was a loud mouth, claimed entitlement, and every body around him has to smell his horse shit.

I always rep one of the colleges I graduated from. UNT is my favorite since I have way more ties. No matter if the sports teams suck, we are lucky to have such a great community around UNT (Full of mostly UNT students and alumni). Rep the CAW till I die!

I, too, have had several instances like you stated above.  The most memorable one I have was last January while in Europe I encounter many UNT students, alumni, and even professors.  My friend which wore an A&M shirt most of the time never once had anyone come up to him.  I always make it a point to bring a UNT shirt anytime I leave the state or country for this reason.  Heck, just this past summer I ended up in an elevator in New York City with another UNT student.  We are everywhere!

That is because only Aggie students and redneck racist turds (That can not afford to go to Europe) like them.

ran into a fan while wearing my hat in the Garden of the Gods this Saturday in Colorado Springs.  He knew that we were currently getting our asses handed to us so I imagine that he keeps up with the program.

or he randomly followed us in one of the last 11 years that wasn't 2013.

Not more than a couple of months goes by in LA where someone doesn't recognize a NT shirt I have on and ask if i went to school there and say they are from DFW too.  Not all are NT alumni themselves, though most are.

Very nice older woman working as an usher(or similar) at Minute Maid Park for the Astros game asked if I went there, I said yes and that I graduated '07. She said she graduated in '66 I believe and I told her it was a pleasure to meet her. I like to wear NT gear anywhere I go for instances like that.
