  • MGN Podcast 48: Game day - Join us live Saturday morning (around 9-10am) as we provide y'all with Mean Green talk before the big game. Think of this as a little college gameday show, just for North Texas fans. This week there won't be a rain out!

On one of the video's I called Iowa's QB Beat-Hard instead of Beth-ard. I just couldnt help myself.

This is a tough match-up for North Texas. Not sure NT will be able to slow down the Iowa running game enough. I also think Beathard will have a great game against us. His mobility along with Iowa's short passing game will just be too much to handle. I dont think NT will be able to win the battles in the trenches on both lines. I do think NT can get to Beathard with some blitzes and stunts. Beathard took quite a few big hits against a tough Pitt defense.

I dont think Iowa will score a ton points on us, unless NT is consistently turning the ball over and giving them a short field. I also think the fact that we played such a physical team in Rice last week will work against us big time. A number of the UNT players were beat up and bruised. Playing a team like Iowa the next week is not a great scenario. The offense has to sustain long drives. Im not sure how long the defense will be able to hold up.

Sorry. Chad Davis had a bad game in my opinion, but he wasn't abused vertically.  He really only gave up one catch all season.  The TD after the kidsy fumble.  10-13 yard slant that he should have jumped and picked off.

I don't think whitfield has been abused much either.  A lot of the big plays were on the safeties.  Even if the corner was running behind the play and it may have looked like they were beat, it was the safety that blew the coverage.  Corner is going to mainly cover the flats and deep outside third.  Not many plays down the sidelines. Most in the middle.

Abused was too strong of a word I agree.

I dont think Chad Davis could have picked that play off.

Our DBs lost one on one battles with Parks. Whitfield lost a battle with Parks right before half time. McClain got burned for one 54 yarder. Safeties and CBs both had bad days in coverage. For the corners it wasnt so much being out of place, it was losing a one on one battle.

man, if he would have played it the way he was supposed to, it would have been a pick, inc, or jackson would have double clutched and it would have been a sack.  Bad coverage.  He lined up inside to take away the slant.  No way you let him release inside and you are lined up inside.  He second guessed and hesitated and got beat.  Thats all on him. And on top of all that, a blitz was called.  No way you play for a fade with a blitz called. Score should have been 3-0, 3-3, or 10-0 UNT...even with the kidsy mistake.

Agree about whit before the half.  Only a few seconds left, I am sure a safety was supposed to be somewhere in the middle though.  Whit should have taken the PI for 15 yards.  No way should you not have a safety back there with less than a minute left.  Horrible coaching and/or blown assignment by the safety.  Rice was on their own 24.

Watched the replay of Rice game.  Safeties have to play a lot better in coverage.  Too much happening underneath.  The defense is set up for them to make big plays and they have not.  Fans and maybe even coaches, are fooled by the tackle stats.

1st half Rice threw for 196.  2 plays were on the corners.  They were the most memorable plays though.  12 yard slant on Davis for the TD.  43 yard post on Whit before the half.  With 30 seconds left.  Both safeties in no man's land. I guess we still count that on whit cause he covered it.  Not really his fault if the right defense and coverage is called.  55 yards on corners.  141 on safety.

As we all remember, in 2013 trice and Lee made big plays with fumbles and ints.  Safety need to step up in coverage.

Against Iowa, they will both be peeking in the backfield most of the game.  Their performance will determine whether the defense looks good.
