James Gray and a few of his North Texas teammates were at Apogee Stadium this summer when they came up with an idea for what they agreed would be a video with viral potential among Mean Green fans.

Gray has only been on campus for a few months and already had established himself as one of the best athletes on the team.

The video they shot that day illustrates that fact.

The 6-foot, 200-pound junior safety stood flat-footed, jumped off the turf and casually turned himself over in a backflip while eying a ball quarterback DaMarcus Smith had fired at him from a few yards away.

Gray caught the ball and stuck the landing on his second try — a feat his teammates caught on tape and posted on every social media outlet they could find, from Twitter to Instagram.

“I came up with the idea,” Gray said. “We were out there fooling around, catching the ball before camp started. DaMarcus had very good accuracy with the ball, so I told him to put it right here and let’s see if I can catch it.”

Gray landed his first backflip at the age of 9. He didn’t need long to make the adjustment to catching a ball in the process after he and his teammates elected to give it a try.

He completed the trick on his second attempt after dropping the ball the first time. Smith placed it perfectly — just above Gray’s head so that as he flipped he was able to spot it and pull it in.

Hmmm

DaMarcus needs a chance.

He will get his chance. It may not be early in the year, but he will get his chance.

Can DaMarcus break the streak of busts as QB recruits around here? Or will it be another guy. Perhaps maybe someone not on campus.

If he can catch while doing backflips on only the second try...I have high hopes for our turnover margin if we can keep him on the field.  Holy crap.  And I like DaMarcus's reaction to the video, HA!
