“It was like starting all over, starting my life all over, making new friends,” Dunbar said. “It was a pretty crazy experience, but I think it made me who I am today, a better person.”

Dunbar ran for 3,025 yards and scored 25 rushing touchdowns in his 21/2 seasons at Haltom and earned a scholarship to North Texas.

He finished his four-year college career as the Mean Green’s all-time leading rusher, with 4,224 yards, and all-time leading scorer, with 49 touchdowns. Now in his fourth NFL season, Dunbar has earned a bigger role with the Cowboys.

“I feel like the game is what made it a whole lot easier for me and my family, because the [Haltom] football team was like a family,” he said. “They accepted us, took us in like their own. They made it a whole lot easier. My coaches helped out as much as they could. They felt the pain we were going through. They made it easier for us. … My coaches did a hell of a job helping us out.”

The article's about the immediate effect on his life from Katrina, it being the 10 year anniversary. And there's no hate for North Texas either.

well...maybe some people like UNT more than they liked Hurricane Katrina and would simply prefer to hear more about the prior than the latter.

Not a lot of love for NT in his comments. Makes me sad.

The article was about Katrina and its immediate aftermath, which for him was in Haltom City, for one thing.  For another, the guy has continued to show up in Denton to support us, and has been quoted as saying that if he were to go into coaching, he'd want to do it at North Texas.  And I hope he gets the chance.

I didn't say there was hate for NT or that he shunned us but I was hoping that he would've said something nice about our coaches in the story in the same way he did about the Haltom coaches. I'm sure Dodge and Co helped make him the man he is just like Haltom.

You're probably right, but his NT days don't fit the narrative of the story.  He was at NT 2-3 years later.
His Haltom coaches helping him during the tumultuous times around his forced-move is what the story is about.

He really should purchase the property on the other side of Bonnie Brae, build student housing on it with his own money, requiring student residents therein to pay an athletic fee surcharge of $5,000 per annum per capita, then donate the remainder of all NFL income to the UNT athletic department, all the while, hosting a Saturday morning variety show titled, "How do I love UNT? Let's count the ways," while dressed in a green and white striped blazer and hat in the spirit of the late Mr. Peppermint, conducting a telethon to persuade Jerry Jones to change the official colors of the Cowboys to green and white.

Ok, if you go back and look at the Lance got a contract and should donate to NT, I was one of the voices saying he had done enough for us. All I was trying to say was that it would've been nice that we'd just been mentioned by him, that's all.

Haven't seen those in like 3 years. My fiancee grabbed one when the old union bookstore was closing, but it was some super cheap like penny type jersey. I have a #3 Nike one that's basic but cool. Last one they made. Sold like crap though, so would doubt to see another one.

Thanks for the info.
