And, regarding discretionary spending, do these guys/gals not deserve to have a good time every once in a while?

Absolutely not

Or, are they robots that only exist to study and entertain us with their athletic feats?

FTFY. It really is all about narcissism and basking in the hubris of reflected glory.

And, if he's smart, make money while he's holding the rest like a bank.

So...the athletic department is soon to invest in a series of Domino's franchises?

I'm confused as to what we're arguing about.

Do we want to keep the COA stipends out of everyone's hands because we're worried some students may spend it irresponsibly?

What about the responsible ones, who would actually budget and spend on things they actually need?

To me it was just about not putting it all in their hands at once. The money is theirs in the end, so cheque by cheque more of it should end up there until at the end of the year they have the full 4 k. How they spend it then, well that IS their buisness in my mind. Whether universities should also grant them leisure money (by definition COA is not that) is an entierly different discussion.

just 20 year olds? I think anybody CAN be irresponsible with money, but no, I don't assume that most 20 year olds, especially those committed to a rather rigorous system like a college football team that sets high expectations for performance/academics/representation...can't maintain a budget, let alone that they'll go lay whatever cash they happen into on red and see what happens.
but then, I'm much further from the program than you are and perhaps you know of some players with a gambling addiction. in hindsight, I was certainly wrong to ask for their names publicly...PM me and let's see what we can't find for help for these players...maybe a local GA program?

unless of course it was just a baseless statement...

and I'd contend many more who view the aid as their means to an education and spend it appropriately

sure does feel like a number of you are projecting your own dumb-ass 20 year old selves onto every 20 year old out there.

Did your parents hand you $4000 at the beginning of the semester and say "yelp, there you go. Don't spend it all in one place," or did they give you money as needed and ask why the money was needed?

Its about being responsible TO the student athlete. UNT is supposed to actually care about them, right? You don't just throw money at young people you care about.

Unless you are an SMU parent...

If any of you did college in Denton right you blew way more that $4000 on stupidity... I was a bartender on Fry street. If there is one thing we do in Denton better than anywhere else in Texas is spend money at out local watering holes.  I am not judging. I spent more than my fair share!!! Thank god the casino was in Louisiana. I would have blown every cent I made if it was closer! And lets be honest, more than one of us made the drive to Oklahoma after 2 am to get beer, even if it was that low alcohol content beer that it is sold up there.

I can't predict the future as to if this decision is good or bad. I am sure both situations will come out of it. For now, these young men put in a ton of hours learning and honing their skill set, which most of us know will not pay off as a professional career. If it fails then at least we know that paying players isn't a viable tool.

JimJim, Ellis, Loving, Schelleci and Abbe(?)...five players...over a three year period...assume 20 or so scholarship players graduated...we're talking 125 scholarships.
5/125 = 4%.

I don't think 90 or James said that all players would spend the money all at once. I think it's reasonable to be concerned about giving them all the money at one time because some of them may "blow it".

there's also thousands of other students on campus that receive financial aid refund checks much larger than that amount and spend it poorly. People will always find ways to screw things up.

financial aid requires you to prove that you paid your tuition. Also, banks aren't required to care about the person receiving the loan. They take a risk that you will re-pay the loan so that they can be rewarded with interest income from the loan.

COMPLETELY different situation

The banks are taking NO risk on student loans.  None.  They cannot be discharged except by death, and the principal and interest are guaranteed by the US government -- i.e., your tax dollars.  It's kinda like a student fee for grownups that we can't get out of.

You're right.  COMPLETELY different situation.

Who cares. It's  $3900 spread over 8-12 months. In the grand scheme of things that's chump change. It must remain chump change and my fear is that it won't. And if or when it doesn't you can bet on it that we'll get left in the dust. It's a step in the maturation of professional sports if not handled properly, and yes, micromanaged and dictated accordingly.

you sure we should trust you on how to spend money?

I kid...advanced liberal arts degree high-five!

Not sure I trust myself actually. I am still feeling a bit weird about the fact that my new postdoc funding agency will pay me my yearly salary all at once and up front (seriously who does that).

Did your parents...

No.

90 said the money is going to straight to the casino
James said people will always find a way to screw up
you pulled examples of 5 players over 3 years getting caught making foolish decisions.

and I actually agree that dispersing the coa more like a salary is probably best for all parties...it tends to be for anybody...20, 40, 60 years old...and you can express that sentiment without making baseless assumptions about a person's character.

I, for one, blew all my Pell and Cal grants on hookers and blow four years in advance before I even moved in to my freshman dorm.

As for parents giving me a check, lulz.  That's funny.  Haven't received a dime from my parents since I was 14 years old, very sparingly before that.

It seems that most of us agree on the bolded part.

The rest of this is arguing about semantics and you making an assumption that they were denigrating a person's character.

If I received 6 months of pay upfront, I'm afraid my family would be living under some shade trees in a rather nice set of REI tents.  It's not that we aren't responsible with money but, wow that would be a challenge for anyone.

Lol.

What person did I single out? It was a  statement to make a point. But you knew that.

Is it so painful just to admit that we agree on something?
