McCarney being excited to plug Thad Thompson (a guy who hasn't even been here as long as DaMarcus has) in, yet reiterating that DaMarcus has to continue to "work his way up", is concerning.

Whole lot easier to step in as a WR than it is a QB.

I wonder if there is any other program in the nation, that denies access to their only beat writer?  Vito is basically NT's only outside coverage and yet after years covering the program he is not trusted enough to view a scrimmage, yet many others are.

I guess the coaching staff is not capable of explaining what they don't won't reported, and/or Vito just can't keep from reporting all this sensitive information to the world.

so true. It baffles me as to why Vito would not be welcomed to everything. Without Vito who else would bother covering UNT athletics? Why deny the one person who tries to get them media attention.

I know we were all hoping (and i still am), but anyone who thought a jc qb who wasnt included in the winter, spring, or summer workouts would come in and challenge and star was really misguided. there simply isnt enough time to receive and digest the fairly complex playbook we have (even though we dont seem to use mot of it) and show the team that you are head and shoulders above the incumbent. 3-4 weeks isn't enough time. Even if it ends up being close at the end, Mcnulty will still get the nod as it should be. D Smith isn't superman or he wouldn't have ever had to leave WKU (He wouldn't have decommitted from Louisville because of Teddy Bridgewater either). I think he is better than Mcnulty but he left himself little time to prove it. McNulty is our starter and will be our starter for most of 2015 at the very least. Good news is that he looks a lot better from the limited coverage we have seen of the team and the team is much improved around him. Smith will end up being the backup this season unless there is an injury or a disaster. Learn to live with it.

Even if Mac thinks one of the other QBs can overtake McNylty, the last thing he wants to do is undermine McNulty's confidence or stature with the team. If McNulty does end up being the starter, he has to command respect.

I expect in a week or so to start hearing how McNulty is being pushed and how everyone has really improved in order to get people pumped up.

Practices have been closed to beat writers before at a number of schools. OU did it several times in the 80s, but the time I recall best was the height of the Switzer scandal. It's usually at a time when a team doesn't want any chance of leaks of player or play changes.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not excited at the thought of McNulty being the starting QB. He hasn't really shown much during game time that would give me confidence in him.

However, maybe he is the best option right now. Derek Thompson was very similar in his progression. We all thought it was the end of the world going into his senior year because of his lack of ability to make plays, but then we had a great season. After watching the Periscope videos, it was clear that this season will come down to him and Smith, but McNulty knows the offense better and can take care of the ball.

Either way, our defense better be ready to pick up the slack of our offense.

DRC full story: Quotes from McCarney on distribution of snaps, how far Smith has to go to compete

http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/sports-headlines/20150815-football-mcnulty-shines-in-unt-s-first-scrimmage.ece

So a scrimmage that Vito WASN'T invited to watch, and a few Mac'isms like "he has been around for the longest" and "he knows the offense the best", result in an article titled "McNulty Shines In First Scrimmage"?  Shines?  I don't recall any quotes, even from his adoptive daddy Mac, that said "McNulty has star potential" or "He probably won't throw silly interceptions to lose us games" or "His arm strength is better than most 8th graders".

Take care of the ball?? Watch much UNT football last year? The passing game was leashed up like a junkyard pitbull and he still managed to throw more picks than td's. We are having him shoved down our throats. The scrimmage highlights noted Smith, Greer, Rex, Kidsy and Jimmy.  AM wasn't noted.

Would that I could +1 you.  Well played...unlike most of our forward passes.

Actually, they are usually well played... by the other team. just sayin.

I know no one wants to hear this, but it seems like they are really giving the other QBs a chance. If MiniMac wins out I am all for it. He finished out last season, has been working his tail off, and has the respect of his teammates. If he sucks then I believe D.Smith will get a chance. Till then I am on board with MiniMac aka Andrew Football.
