There was some pretty big news on the UNT athletics front, and it had nothing to do with football practice.

It looks like UNT is on the verge of bumping up its student athletic fee. The school’s students are currently paying $10 a semester credit hour, or about $300 a year. Getting that fee through back in 2008 was an epic battle that might have saved UNT’s football program as a viable FBS operation.

That fee hasn’t budged since, but UNT’s regents will consider bumping it up $1 a credit hour. That might not sound like much, and it isn’t — at least not on the basis of an individual student.

It’s $30 a year, ballpark.

That makes a big difference, though, at a school like UNT that has a massive student population of 36,000. It’s about a million dollars. UTSA is charging a whole lot more, but at least UNT is making a move.
