The term “running back” can imply a few things if we are going to be stubborn.  Generally, it implies – first and foremost – that a player is great at running the ball in the running game.   Take a handoff and run the ball is the general terms that we are hoping the player can perform.

But, what if that isn’t a great fit for the player?  Do we flush him out into the wild or do we look for a creative way to make him something special?

In the case of Lance Dunbar – a North Texas product who arrived as an undrafted free agent in 2012 much the same way as Cole Beasley did from SMU – there is no question how the Cowboys have aspired to figure out a way to make him their “joker.”  Just like in the game of cards, jokers are amazing weapons in football because they don’t fit into the book easily when it comes to figuring out ways to defend them.  It is often used to describe the difficult to handle tight ends, but I think we can also list the running backs who aren’t actually running backs.  Darren Sproles, Reggie Bush, maybe even Randall Cobb, and yes, the Cowboys hope, Lance Dunbar is at least a “poor man’s” version of that.  He is listed as a running back, but if we judge him as running backs are judged, we will quickly be underwhelmed with his running the ball (especially inside) and his pass protection.  Both are just not up to the NFL grade."
