Nick Starkel

Got hurt early into his JR year, fits the mold of what Mac says he wants in QB with the height, and pro style guy. He and his dad reached out to coaches at UNT and never heard a stinking word.... He now holds offers from OSU and ATM..... Committed to first school who offered, could have and would have been us. He's now at the opening in Oregon and I believe it is also for the Elite 11.  I am really struggling to support the current offensive staff. I know these facts bc I spoke with his QB coach who is a friend of mine this weekend about Nick and why he wasn't on UNTs radar or offer sheet. @BillySee58 what do you think?

Surprised?

honestly, yes, when I coached there Liberty Christian, UNT stopped by daily, I forget the DC's name (Clint Bowen) we lost him to Kansas. He would come in hang out draw stuff up, heck of a recruiter, heck of a ball coach.  He always asked about kids we knew even if it wasn't at our school in the private sector that UNT could target.

I'm not surprised, not surprised at all.

Anthony Taylor (2 star) comes to mind when talking about missing on players. He was a catalyst in Denton Guyers offense over the last 2-3 seasons. Really good RB that was overshadowed by his teams QB's and WR's. Though he had 0 notable offers at the time Dennis Franchoine swooped in and picked him up. He is a solid player that has versatility written all over him, a Willie Ivery type player. He is also the kind of player at the kind of school that UNT must develop a great relationship with. Franchoine is taking a chance on him and that is something that Guyers coaches are going to remember down the road.

Let me get this straight...you are saying t,his kid would have picked UNT and stayed with that pick after getting offers from Okie State and Texas A&M? You know this with absolute certainty?

If so, that is fantastic and shows that UNT is now of a position where it can compete with the "big boys" and win local recruits.

his coach told me this kid wanted to honor the first school that gave him a shot at being a D1 QB bc that has been his dream all his life. I tend to believe a kid like that, if something happened otherwise so be it, but why would you not even extend the offer? Hell we are recruiting kids who have 20-30 offers and we come in at the end, it's one thing to offer first or early. ATM came in late to offer, other than that not a school on their we can't out recruit if we get the right people in front of him. It would be us vs OSU and his family obviously lives in the area and I would be willing to bet they'd love to go watch him play 5 Saturday's a year ;-) got my schedule jab in.

He might have committed to us early, but no way would we wouldve have been able to hold on. Still you have to try to land guys. NT is committed to not getting a good QB commit. The feeling is that with a good running game and defense we can win or be in any game. The QB position has been devalued by this staff.

Hey, come to UNT COMPETE FOR AND HAVE A SHOT TO START AND PLAY FOR 4 years!!! Come be the change to turn this machine around!! We are speeding the offense up, we will pound it to relieve some pressure on you and keep safeties guessing. We are ready to bust out and get it changed, be part of it! You don't even talk bad about other schools, just build up yours. Kids want to be part of change whether y'all believe it or not.

Again, why would any of you expect a QB like either of those listed in this thread to seriously consider us when we run an offense that is attractive to bus drivers? A QB that is going to OSU or A&M is going to be a spread QB, while a Qb under Franchione is going to either run a lot himself or still throw it around more than he ever would here.

Until you run an offense that is perfectly made for a throwing QB, not one that is perfectly designed to hand off 75% of the time and then throw two-yards from the LOS on the other plays, you can forget about QBs like this from a Texas high school.

Damarcus Smith better turn into something great from JUCO becuase if he doesn't, we aren't gonna have anywhere to pull QBs from, except from more of Mac's old teammates' kids in Iowa.

Wonder why you say Chico and Co. instead of blaming just Mac like most on here do.  Seems like you have some details or good info, and not just guessing.

This pretty much adds to what i have stated a few times about the highly rated, 3 Star QB from Fort Bend who had interest in UNT, but Chico was all in on Conner Means.  Heard from a fairly decent source (not a player) it was Chico who was making these decisions.  Even though other coaches wanted to give certain guys a look.  I wonder how many times this has happened...

Somebody has been smoking something that is now legal in Colorado if they think that kid sticks with UNT over OSU or A&M .... Both of which are easy drives from the metroplex.  Heck, I have made the drive to Stillwater many many times.  Easy...all highway now that Hwy 51 has been improved.

Yes, I agree you must try.  And, UNT has been trying just that a lot recently...much more than in prior years.  Heck, even offered Irvin's kid who had that Miami offer he accepted.  Everyone can find kids that "could have/should have" in their personal opinions.  Easy for the armchair recruiters to do.  if you are a local area coach and want to help maybe you could reach out to Coach Mac and ask for a sit down and discuss recruiting.  Is a tad puzzling why UNT coaches are not haunting the hallways and gyms and practice fields of local area high schools.

Mac and Co are running a top level recruiting program, which cannot be said for several who came before him.  The fact that they are running local camps, satellite camps, performing full evaluations even on fairly high level recruits is different than much of the stealth recruiting that came before.  I believe he is putting UNT on the radar of many more athletes, coaches, and parents than every before.  It has not paid off a lot so far, but he has had his surprises here and there.  A few more years of doing things the right way, coupled with some success on the field, will do wonders.

It would be fun to see the results of what it would be like if we were able to recruit the number of highly/higher rated athletes that UH and smoo typically recruit.

Well hell, that settles it.  We can't hold on to him, so why even try?

1. This staff is set on not taking a high school QB this class. I think that's absolutely terrible roster management, considering our 2 underclassmen QBs are long shots to  even be decent D1 QBs, and we won't give Dillman a shot. Roster management like that is why we've had to sign JUCO QBs in 4 out of 5 classes under Mccarney.

2. I don't see us being able to hold off Oklahoma State had we offered first. Regardless of what he may have said, when actual good recruiters start laying down the hot sauce, not to mention the track record of QB development by their staff and our staff, I just think there's no way.

3. Not in direct response to GMG24, but people will always complain about which local kids we don't recruit. I don't care as long as we're winning recruiting battles and getting high-caliber recruits. I do careore when we aren't, which we aren't.

He has to actually do well before we can complain about our staff not getting him. While that's true for anyone, it's especially true for a guy nearly everyone passed on.

Any player with little to no offers playing, and getting opportunities, at a program with the exposure of Guyer is a player I won't get upset at the staff for not pursuing, unless he proves to be a good D1 player. In which case they didn't see the late bloomer potential another staff did.

Sure, fair assessment. But the kid in his Jr and Sr years combined rushed for over 2,000 yards, 38 total touchdowns and carried an average 8.5 ypc. What he did with his limited touches due to Guyer always having a good QB around him speaks volumes to his potential. Texas State saw the potential, North Texas didn't. This guy is a prime example of being able to find that "diamond in the rough" kind of player. A bonus is that this kid played at a HS football factory.

Would you trade head coaches with Texas State?? I would in a heartbeat.

A diamond in the rough? So Guyer is a rough? Are you kidding? Guyer is more like a gold mine.

Jeffery Wilson is a diamond in the rough, coming from Elkhart, Texas, a place which rarely produces D1 football players. Calling a school that averages over 5 D1 signees a year a rough?

He hasn't produced yet so there's no proof their evaluation of him was a good one. I'm not a big fan of this coaching staff, but I'll at least be consistent in my criticism. I don't like seeing them fill up with classes full of guys with little to no other offers. The players with better offer listed have panned out at a much higher rate and have been our all-conference players.

So the player is both the diamond and the rough? Or just the rough? Then who's the diamond?

Yes, it's going to happen every year. It doesn't matter if we're getting a class full of highly recruited kids, and winning games. We aren't. That's the problem. Not choosing to not offer kids few, or no, other teams are.
