Bellaire recently hired Herb Kunz as head coach. Kunz spent two seasons as the Cardinals' special teams coordinator and the past offseason as defensive coordinator before replacing Trey Sissom, who left Bellaire to become Fort Bend Travis' head coach.

A secondary goal for the Cardinals is to knock off rival Lamar, which has owned District 20-6A.

"To win a district championship, we've got to figure out how to beat Lamar," said Kunz, a former walk-on at North Texas State University who played in high school at Georgetown.

But Kunz credited his predecessors at Bellaire, Sissom and Trey Herrmann (who left the Cardinals for Alvin and is now head coach at Katy Taylor), for leaving him a strong foundation.
