On-and-off drizzle Sunday afternoon didn’t cool down Michael Cotton.

Cotton, a 19-year-old sophomore at North Texas, started with a dismal first eight holes, but he finished his last 10 a fiery 8-under par. His 7-under 29 on the back nine propelled him to a victory in the Texas State Amateur Golf Championship.

Cotton finished at 9-under 204, three ahead of Preston Stanley — who like Cotton hails from Katy — and four in front of Lewisville’s Grant Bennett.

Eight holes into Sunday’s final round, Cotton appeared to be falling out of contention. He acknowledged that after shanking his tee shot on the par-3 eighth hole, he “could see it start to slip away.”

“I missed a lot of chances and made a lot of mistakes,” Cotton said. “My dad just kept telling me that he still believes and that I need to believe, so I just hung in there.”

      Around the League / UNT Opponents

      as mentioned in another thread, three pretty easy wins last night (11/19) for Rice, Tulane and Charlotte. Evansville lost 80-30 to Ohio State. UNI won. not all, but the most interesting games coming up: tonight (11/20) - not a ton...Tulsa host UALR (who already blew out UTSA), but if Tulsa is any good should take care of. 11/21 - Memphis @ San Francisco ; FAU v. Oklahoma State (3 day tourney...would play Miami or Drake next) ; Oregon State host Oregon ; Houston Christian v. Rice ; ECU v. Jacksonville State (3 day tourney...would play Toledo or Stetson next) 11/22 - Utah State v. Iowa and St. Louis v. Wichita State (same venue, but not a tourney) ; McNeese v. Illinois State and UAB v. Longwood (same side of bracket) ; Temple v. Florida State ; ECU/FAU game 2 of 3 11/23 - Temple v. UMASS 11/24 - High Point v. Missouri State (3 day tourney...would play ODU or Boston College next) there will be more games 11/23 and 11/24 as some of these tournaments shake out, but definitely some interesting games starting tomorrow

      Texas Wesleyan (11/21/24)

      Texas Wesleyan is one of those athlete mill schools that take advantage of kids/parents who really want to be a college athlete. The majority of students at the school are athletes and the teams will take almost anyone to be on the roster as long as they can qualify for an overpriced college loan to afford the tuition.

      Back to the Frisco Bowl Again🤮🤮

      I don’t mind a local bowl game that is inexpensive to attend in person. Now, if we were having a 9 or 10-win season and really deserved something better that would be different. But it is not. Frisco is fine for this season.

      when I wrote that I had forgotten Utah State was a possible/likely opponent, but ya, that's definitely something my nerd-brain is already into tracking. I'll confidently say though that McNeese is our toughest opponent so far. Minnesota struggled in the first half again last night against against Cleveland State, a team that lost by 48 at Michigan and currently sits 195 in KenPom

      Next week's ECU game is our last chance this season to sellout DATCU Stadium

      He had play designs of wide receiver screens you could run 10 different ways.
