A set of sweeping rules changes in college basketball were approved today.

The Associated Press covered the entire slate of adjustments in its story that came out this afternoon.

Among the highlights …

– The shot clock in the men’s game will drop from 35 to 30 seconds.

– The women’s game will be played with four 10-minute quarters.

– The restricted arc under the basket will be extended from three feet to four feet.

– The number of timeouts and stoppages during games will also be cut down.

The big fallout from the entire set of changes is a faster-paced game.

Coaches knew this was coming for months. UNT men’s coach Tony Benford said over the last few weeks during UNT’s coaches caravans that he believes the changes will benefit his team.

Benford has said throughout his tenure that he wants to play an up-tempo style and push the ball while still being a solid, defensive-oriented team.

I like those changes. Reducing the shot clock was long overdue. Also, reducing the timeouts is nothing but good. Our team particularly can only benefit from less coach interference ;)

Get ready for plenty of coaching blunders, there will still be official timeouts TVs got to make their money.  This will be good long term, but I think some really good coaches will cost their teams some wins next year bc of it. Mainly early in the year possibly into early conference. Just my thoughts. I like the extended restricted area, and wish they would go to nba Defensive 3 seconds so we don't have to watch zone defense or at least a stagnant one anyway. :)

Moving to four 10-minute quarters for the women's game will be interesting.  Hopefully the period between quarters one/two and three/four will not be that long.

That shouldn't be an issue except for maybe 1 or 2 games a month tops, though, right?

They experimented with ten minute quarters in men's basketball in some of the early season tourneys like Maui several years back.  No one seemed to like it very much, so I don't think they'll go to it for awhile unless the women's game improves significantly with that change.

So how long until the men have a 24 second shot clock and four ten minute quarters? Assuming official timeouts will also be a thing of the past.

Probably at least 20 years if not never.  The original 45 second shot clock(introduced in the mid 1980's) went down to 35 in 1994.
