Imo, guys like Gates, Gonzalez, JThomas, Graham, wouldn't fare as well in the NBA. So moreso the player's direction, rather than NFL team's attempting to find diamonds in the rough. 6'7", 250lb would be a great NFL TE size, but might be on the smallish size for a power forward in the NBA (Gates I believe is 6'6"). The trend is cooling tho, seeing that you have to hit a home run in order for it to work, and they are few and far between. JThomas has his limitations, and it took him several years to pan out.

Could the trend be cooling due in part to players choosing football earlier if they are in that size/speed/agility range?

I'm loving our football talent evaluation around here.

Rick

Edit:

He got offers to play football at some midwest Big10 schools, but instead opted to play basketball at the JC level before transferring to UNT. Guessing that he didn't even register as someone that would be interested in playing football at UNT, considering that he turned down Big10 football to play JC basketball.

TLDR; do your research.

I thought he signed and played BB at Central Michigan right out of high school? So I'm guessing that he has blown off the idea of playing FB for us in the fall, or were there eligibility issues?

What kind of recent precedent is there for a guy not to play a down of college football and then go to the NFL?

Antonio Gates (and a few others) only played basketball in college and had a great NFL career at TE. Sav Rocca (rugby) was a 33 year old rookie punter in '06 who never went to college and is still trying to play. There have also been several track, soccer (kickers), and rugby guys who first played football in the NFL, along with a few more unusual stories of NFL guys who never went to college like Mike "Beer Man" Lewis.
