It might be song selection. Baton twirling is graceful and artistic, while riffles are about precision and power. If you are playing an intense song it might not fit do baton. The skills themselves might also be different enough to let people choose which one they do, and go with that.
Bobby Hurley was a fantastic player. But the same fire that makes the Hurley's great also makes them unhinged as coaches. I remember reading a book on Bob Hurley Sr once (The Miracle of St. Anthony I think?) Great. great coach (who obviously loved the kids) - but he was more of a dick than Bobby Knight in coaching them up.
