Quick, short passing game doesn't work against 8 and 9 in the box on defense. Interceptions waiting to happen.

Have to make them pay deep.

Could we turn to the short quick passing game because our starting QB doesnt have the arm strength to attack teams vertically?

I'm sure we will. I doubt we will be successful. Other teams watch film, also.

We know Harris can stretch the field and accomplish this, but too many times he's running free only to have to either stop, or stop and come back to catch the ball. He was really the only one who could stretch the field reliably. Hopefully Goree & Rutherford can help now.

Doesn't matter how great your receivers are when you don't have a QB that can get them the ball.

We really have zero idea about our receivers from last year because the QB position was so terrible.

I never met Becky Hall. I spoke with her lots and lots of times. I have never made it a habit of going to the Athletic Dept. to hang around. It's funny hthat if I did need to stop by, she was at lunch or had just stepped out. I always found her to be friendly and reliable. Whenever I needed someone to call me, I'd call Becky first and then I'd get a call. I always assumed I'd meet her and now time has expired. There is a lesson here.

Thanks Becky.

Quick short passing game requires quick decision-making by the QB, and getting open by WRs, or being consistent in the open field in the screen game.

C'mon Goree, Rutherford, and Thompson.

The quick, short passing game also requires good reads by both the QB and the WR. That worries me. Put Dajon back there and run the offense Vince Young ran at UT. He scored like a 2 on the Wonderlic Test, so I think anyone could run that offense.

They aren't dumbing this offense down at all for anyone and that's apparent. The short to intermediate passing game is the hardest route combination to throw because the QB still has to have arm strength to get it in there but there also needs to be a very high rate of accuracy. It's also the easier route combos to defend...think pack line defense in basketball...virtually same concept. Not only is it the easiest route combos to defend it also sets the defense up to stop the run on any given play. Ohhh man... Strap yourself in gents... I have a feeling this season is gonna be a long ride.

Insanity... This coaching staff is flirting with the textbook definition.

chico also said that we would be moving more to a quicker pace. I assume more hurry up and quick tempo. the short passing game would match this style of play. quick and easier reads for the qbs.

i think this should have a positive impact on our offense and is much needed. defensive coaches do not like uptempo offenses because a quick 3 and out will have the defense back on the field too soon. is it a coincidence that we are going uptempo since skladany is gone? i know he hated the uptempo when he was at houston. understandable from a defensive perspective, but when your offense is struggling, it should be allowed to try something new to get it going.

an attacking quick pace offense will put more pressure on the opposing defenses. even if it is short passing and predictable, the defense will still have to make adjustments and get set.

how many times have we made adjustments, audibles and called plays based on the defense? and still came out with something short and predictable. giving the defense time to set up and adjust. im glad we are planning on attacking more. even if it is short passes.

it worked for la tech this year against us. it worked for utsa also. and we also had safeties cheating up in the box.

The fact that Greer has a chance to be the starting QB is mind boggling... I mean I want to give the guy a chance, but the Texas game and LA Tech game was just awful. AAAWWWWFFFUUUULLLLL. I seriously hope Williams can show up to Coach Mac, because I can see Greer having a meltdown again. Williams may have issues, but the guy has the drive and better confidence in himself. It's nice knowing McNulty is above Greer, but its like comparing a banana to a plantain. Almost the same thing, but the banana is better.

He also wasn't that great vs SMU. He missed on some easy throws in that game

an uptempo/quick pass offense is a bad idea for certain QB's who have a rather "deliberate" throwing motion. It's more ideal for McNulty, Williams, and Means. It would be perfect for Shanbour............. B)

The best example of a quick passing game (three steps and throw) I ever saw was our game against Tulsa in 1982. It was (mostly) the Rusty Hill to Marvin Walker show. Walker had 22 receptions in that game. Hill was 61 for 42. Once again Walker had 22 of those. We eventually lost 38 to 20, but for most of that game Tulsa was really sweating. Based on our respective records, we should have lost something like 40-0.

DW =/= VY. No one is, really. He's the most dominant college player I've ever seen.

I have questions about play-calling and other areas of quarterbacking but I do believe that Canales can determine the level of ability that best fits his offense. If Williams had the level of ability that fits his talent then he would be the starter hands down. That doesn't mean that he can't develop it; he just doesn't have it now.

Greer has throwing accuracy but has made slow decisions and has looked bad many times. However, perhaps he is learning to do quicker reads and that is keeping him in the mix (at least for now).

To me, Means seems like a younger Andrew McNulty. He won't hurt you much but he's also not going to be a game-changer.

My hope is that DaMarcus Smith can be the Moses that at least gets us out of the wilderness, if not to the promised land. He has/had the ability but can he adapt to a new offense in just five weeks? I think so but I am disappointed that he cannot have a playbook to study. I believe that he can throw to receivers informally as long as there are no coaches present (but that may have to wait until spring practice is over).

simplifying the offense

quicker, easier reads

short passing game

seems like these adjustments to the offense are made with demarcus smith in mind. seems like they want to shorten the learning curve and get the best talent out there. hope it works.

A lot of folks are bringing up good points about the quick passing game, or rather some of the shortcomings.

McNulty's strength is in the intermediate region. Imo, he doesn't have the timing down at the end of his drop. The quick, short passing game is not his strong suit especially considering his efficiency was not good, he doesn't have good vision, and his pocket presence is iffy (he is using too much brain and eyes on the pocket, instead of shifting up, left, or right in the pocket). The lack of vision is where INTs will come in, when he doesn't see the LB or safety in coverage. McNulty can be solid against man, (or when he's identified the defender, especially if said defender is covering Marcus Smtih).

Keep him in boot plays, option plays, play actions, intermediate passing. Put him out in open space where he can see the field better, and not throw over guys who are 4-6 inches taller than him.

Additionally, the receivers need to help by being physical at the LOS because they have to create separation quickly, and they actually have to catch the ball. Saw lots of drops last year.

Yep, Aldo is absolutely correct. "Quick" means in the pocket throws that leaves the QB's hands 1-2 seconds. That, IMO (and Aldo's), is not playing to McNulty's strengths. He needs to see 1/2 fields while rolling out so, as Aldo pointed out, he can identify defenders and make proper reads. Underneath shovel passes are lethal on that type of philosophy as well. There are ways to make McNulty look **decent**. Canales is going to have to call really, really good games because there is minimal room for error.

I really, really hope this is correct.
