It was the "independent" status, not really the schools. So Idaho would have been a P5 last year (joke). Maybe we should buy ourselves out of CUSA and try that approach. Granted we would certainly have to have an AD that would be waaaay better at scheduling than our current.

We'd have to produce much much much better schedules. There's been so many positive steps forward for UNT athletics but there have been several steps back lately. Scheduling is a problem. The Army & SMU series are really great but the 5 home games with one being Portland is just sad. The whole lack of winning thing hurts too.

Remind me of how that worked out for us this last season (season ticket sales etc) after a 9-4 season and a bowl win.

He should have said "consistent winning"

BOOM!

Just like that RV delivers a P5 multi year series.

Somebody around here has some splinin to do. Can't wait to here how how this gets spun into a negative. You know, the series 'nobody' wanted?

I literally had a friend and UNT alum last week tell me he was ready to jump on the bandwagon after the 9-4 season but then we stunk it up. He was ready quite yet he wanted to see how it went. The problem is we followed up 9-4 with 4-8 and not being competitive in most losses. Those that have been afraid to jump on the bandwagon aren't going to after one season.

Anyway he then said how are we going to be this season because he wants to jump on the bandwagon.

I literally had a friend.

This made me giggle.

But your point is dead on. We need to be consistently good to draw in supporters. Unlike the Sun Belt, there are still several recognizable teams with reputations that mean something left in CUSA. String together a streak like we did in the Belt, throw in some meaningful OOC wins (which doesn't include meaningless home wins against FCS competition), and you BEGIN to garner interest.

I have no faith that this will ever happen with the current leadership in place at the AD.

I think UNT is literally on the brink of something special in both sports. A ton of pieces are in place, but it's just not happening. In football it's the inept ability to find/develop a QB and in basketball I sincerely think it's coaching. We have the talent elsewhere in football and we have talent on the basketball team with a quality big coming in and a legit point guard becoming eligible this upcoming season.

You sound like I did in 2008.

That's how I felt in the early 90s. The BB team wasn't far removed from the 88 season and we were headed back the D1 in football and that fizzled out quickly.

Heard the same similar thoughts growing up here in Denton during the 70's.

Well then I should just shut my mouth and have no optimism or expectations. You know, the good ole UNT/Denton norm. Got it.

It's a wonder that people actually have the audacity to complain about athletic hires, AD, BOR, financial blunders or really anything UNT related. There is a disgusting amount of indifference infused into this University, alum/fan base, faculty, administration, community, etc. etc.

I think GD was just providing some perspective.

Just out of curiosity, where do you see us being on the brink of anything special in the two big sports? In football, we have a horrendous schedule with 2 P5 bodybag games and only 5 home games, of which 1 is against Portland State, we have no QB on the roster that is a difference maker, and we just finished off another 100+ ranked recruiting class for the umpteenth year since we moved back up to FBS in 1995. And our offensive gameplan is right out of the 1960s. To see more than 4 wins next season, in my opinion, takes some seriously green-colored glasses.

In basketball, we are bringing back the basketball coach who has had one non-losing season in the previous three, which was because the OOC schedule has been dumb-downed significantly. We have talent, but not enough to make a difference over what the head coach brings to each game.

I applaud your fandom, but I just don't see what you see in those two programs being on the brink of anything special, unless you consider special being the brink of hiring a new basketball coach (I do) and of bringing in a new starting QB in 2016 (I do). I think our best chance of getting a .500 program again in football is 2016 at the earliest and basketball probably won't get there for a while when we hire a new coach after next season. I do think that 2017 is the chance to have us get back to being a bowl team in football again, since that would give us a QB who hopefully will have experience as the QB busdriver that Coach Mac needs to run his offense and we will have a few years to build up our defense and special teams again.

I think the talent is in place to be highly competitive in CUSA football (aside from QB, which I mentioned). I think there is talent all over the field, particularly on offense. Big if, but if D. Smith is as good as I think he is then he will come in the fall and take over at QB. If DW is still behind McNulty AND Greer then this job is D. Smith's job to lose even with him being a fall arrival. I think he is going to do wonders with this offense and in hand make what was a semi decent D last year look a lot better.

In basketball, we will miss Voss far more than we will Jordan Williams. And Voss was/is not an irreplaceable player. We have a big coming in paired with a PG that will be eligible this upcoming season. Deandre Harris needs to either come through and be the player we all hope he can be or leave, but if he gets his mind right he is another piece to the ever revolving puzzle. Combs' numbers are going to balloon in his second season, so a lot of my stock is in him to be honest. I am not a Benford advocate and this is not at all me lobbying for him to stay here, but I see at worst 18-14 next season. 18-14 isn't really nothing special as I noted in my previous post, but it's a foundation being put down (granted a foundation that was shredded by our current HC). if we get a nice outside shooter I can see 20-12 with a NIT invitation next season.

7-5 in football is a possibility (w/ D. Smith) that will be a setup year for 2016.

20-12 (w/ NIT) or Benford should get canned.

I think both are realistically attainable if the pieces fall in place. Call me crazy, I guess.
