Never thought you would be so upset over a women's basketball game.

Well, at least we know what really gets you going now. ;-)

UNT women are 3-18 as of tonight. I just got back from Kitty Winter Magee Arena from the T-Dub game against A&M Kingsville, who are 0-20.

Hopefully the Javelinas don't win 4 games down the stretch and wind up being the worst team to play in that gym this season and not us.

The only thing I can think of stranger than the topic of this thread is that I started to think about some way I could talk my wife, who doesn't like watching live basketball anyway, into attending this thing. I mean, when she lived in Raleigh, she was in a situation to be comped tickets to UNC home basketball games at Dean Smith Arena, or whatever they called it, and didn't care for it. I've risen to meet several other challenges recently which nobody expected me to handle, so maybe that's led me to think, "hey, I can talk her into this because...".

So the Snake Pit can't be used?

Rick

If my memory is right from when I lived on campus, when they have these giant multi-day cheer competitions at the Super Pit, they use the Snake Pit as a warm up gym.

Same goes for when they've had UIL color guard competitions.

The snake pit cannot be used. There is no way to set up the replay equipment over there. The replay equipment is more important to the conference than us being on campus. I still think that it is total bs that any varsity sport would be displaced from their own gym for an outside function.

That's the battle we face here. The administration cares more about a cheer competition than one of the 3 revenue sports. Either that or someone at the AD can't read a calander (distinct possibility).

Name any other FBS university in Texas where this would happen. You can't because it doesn't exist.

I think the administration cares more about the money the cheer competetion brings in rather than the actual cheer competition... but yeah, I don't know how much $$ this thing is going to bring in, but if it aint over $1mil, then I don't see why you would displace your own team.

This whole situation was set up years and years ago when the Super Pit was first planned. The athletic dept. Did not have the funds to build the arena....same lack of support problems faced today in many cases...so the arena's "ownership" was given to the University. Thus control and scheduling were no longer under the athletic dept. The teams, both men and women, have been displaced many times over the years for any number of reasons. Practices have been a problem to schedule...and, at times, still are, but we now have the BB practice facility thanks to several generous donors. The old snake pit has been used in the past, but as Flyonthewall mentioned, it can longer be used for games due to conference requirements. Plus, as I believe, Westie, pointed out, the Cheer Competition will also utilize the Snake Pit. This is a big revenue generator for the University and, for Denton itself in some ways, but it really sucks to have to move a UNT home game to TWU. I am just glad our friends at TWU were generous enough to help us out...for a price I am sure.

Just another reason I smile when folks on here scream about how "other schools" can do this and that and how other schools are so much better in so many different ways and how folks proudly announce they will no longer be Mean Green Club members, will lower their contributions, will support the players from afar, will not come to games, will not buy season tickets, etc. While these folks seem very happy to let "other people do it", the historical and current results of such a philosophy continue to rear its ugly head in numerous ways. UNT continues to suffer from its historical (and in many ways current) apathetic fan base. Is it the fans fault entirely? ABSOLUTELY NOT, and in many many ways, UNT and its leadership has shot itself squarely in its own foot on numerous occasions. So, a good bit of fan apathy is 100% understandable. But, what is not clear is why those who claim to support UNT do not understand that to change that culture of apathy they cannot do it from afar. UNT is not "other schools", and will not be until it and it's fan base and the community look squarely into the mirror and see exactly who is holding it back.

But, look at the bright side here...for those fans who will attend this "away" home game, they will get to have some fun heading across town, finding a place to park and checking out TWU's home digs. If you have not seen it before you will enjoy a different view of the game. But, where will they put all the Little Dribblers?

Whoa...you think a women's basketball game...one...would bring in a million dollars? Just kidding. You been to a women's game this year? I would imagine that the athletic dept loses money at each women's home game after paying for the arena rent, security, etc., etc.

If that clinic netted $1000 it would be a net gain over the BB game! Ha! But, this cheer clinic does bring in a nice piece of change, but why oh why must it be scheduled against a home game? Just silly....well, more than silly...dumb!

Zero blame should be place on the fanbase for this. This situation perfectly symbolizes why UNT has struggled in athletics for so long. The university is perfectly happy to displace their own teams for a quick buck. It shouldn't take much foresight to realize it's not a good idea to schedule an event like this in the middle of basketball season.

So what you are saying is either the AD can't read an events calendar, the administration doesn't care about displacing the women's basketball team for a few bucks, or there was a huge miscommunication between the AD and whoever schedules events at the Pit.

2 of these 3 should carry consequences. They won't.

Such a jacked up culture.

I'm not saying that $1mil would even out the ledger financially, but I'm saying everything has a price, and the price for displacing one of our University's representative teams should be very high... not just $20k or something. These girls suit up and play several games/yr representing our University, and pour in countless hours practicing outside of those contests. Even if hosting them loses money (which I'm assuming it does), the University should value them highly.

Think of it like your wedding ring. It may only be worth $100-200 bucks monetarily, but I'm betting it means a lot more to you than just $100-200.

Agree...my point was about the historical...and current....culture that must change if we want to be like the "other" schools folks here love to point to and who do not operate under that same historical malaise that UNT does to this day.

But, let us pose this question....would this ever even come up if UNT games saw large crowds historically for its home games or if, back in the day, support was such that the Athletic Dept had the funds...or could raise them...to build that arena and thus control the scheduling? I think not. if anyone thinks that silos no longer exist at UNT and that the right hand doesn't always coordinate with the left hand need look no further than this example. Dr. Smatresk has stated on many occasions that it is his goal to destroy this silo mentality. Won't happen overnight, but it will happen...and the work has already begun.
