C-USA dealing with whether to pay athletes

University of Texas at San Antonio's Lynn Hickey and other Conference USA athletic directors are meeting this week in Boca Raton, Florida, and one of the items on the agenda is the controversial cost-of-attendance athlete reimbursement model adopted recently by college football's so-called Power Five conferences the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference.

Under the new system, athletes attending participating universities in those conferences may now receive enhanced scholarship support additional money covering expanded costs associated with attending school. Other Division I conferences are now tackling the issue, for fear they could be further relegated to second-tier status.

The most complex and costly of these provisions is cost of attendance. Traditional athletic scholarships cover tuition, fees, room, board and books. Cost of attendance allows universities to cover travel to and from home, clothes and other expenses up to the full amount a traditional student might spend annually. Authorized cost of attendance figures for C-USA member schools vary from $2,000 to $5,000 per student.

Key Question for C-USA schools:

C-USA has allowed each member institution to determine if and how it will award cost of attendance grants. Over the next few weeks, UTSA will be reviewing what is best and most fair for our student-athletes and what is financially feasible. The other important consideration is the need to stay competitive with our peers by offering scholarships of equal value to prospective student-athletes.

This is going to get very interesting in regards to which C-USA schools will pony up and make this happen. There is no question in mind that for those who are able it will provide a distinct recruiting advantage.

In a perfect world yes. But it doesn't appear that is the case, there are different budgets among the C-USA member schools.

In a sense if this is a per school issue it would be a very big recruiting tool, so taking it out if the recruiting budget would make perfect sense. However, this is the exact slippery slope that I hoped would never happen happening right before me. If schools have the option of paying or how much to pay then we might as well kiss our ass good bye in terms of ever even dreaming of P5 status. We'll see how this plays out, it'll be interesting.

These amounts (along with the portion of of scholarships related to room and board, food, etc.) are all taxable income. Does anybody think any of these kids are paying taxes?

So what does it amount to? A couple thousand dollars a year? Well below the filing threshold if that's the total amount of income they have. If not, you know we have a school of business with a really strong accounting program at UNT, right? I'd think real hard about contacting Don Finn and providing opportunities for students to provide tax prep assistance.

I guess I just don't know how much the room and board portion of scholarships is valued at. Could it be close to 10k a year? Maybe, adding another 5k may make these kids owe some tax, I'm not sure.

Good point. The room and board portion of a scholarship is technically taxable.

      Painful loss…

      With as poorly as we played, we fought back in the second half and had a chance to pull off a major comeback win. Kudos to the players and coaches for making Fisher and the crowd sweat this one out. I kinda felt this one coming, but as the second half went on, I also thought this was going to be such a North Texas way to win a basketball game. Just didn't work out for us. Regroup and lock-in for the real prize.

      Women’s Hoops Begins AAC Tournament Monday Night Against ECU

      DENTON, Texas — The UNT women’s basketball team will kick off its postseason run against East Carolina Monday night in the quarterfinals at the American Athletic Conference Championship. The second-seeded Mean Green and No. 7 Pirates will meet for the second time this season with tip-off set for 6 p.m. CT at Dickies Arena. The teams have met twice in the last two seasons with both contests going into multiple overtimes and resulting in UNT victories. North Texas won in Denton, 93-91, in four overtimes on Feb. 27, 2024, in what was the longest game in program history. This season, the Mean Green took a return trip to Greenville where they used a second-half comeback to send the game into overtime. Jaaucklyn Moore’s game-tying 3-pointer in the first overtime eventually led to a 73-71 victory after Jaelyn Talley made a go-ahead layup in double overtime. The Mean Green will look to avenge last season’s early exit at the conference tournament when they fell to Rice, 61-59, in the quarterfinals. For the second straight year, UNT enters as the No. 2 seed following a 23-7 regular season. This year’s team put together a 15-3 mark in league play, marking the most conference wins in program history. East Carolina will play for a second straight day after defeating No. 10 Memphis, 64-45, Sunday afternoon. First Team All-AAC selection Amiya Joyner led the Pirates with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Monday’s game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Varsity Network App with Zac Babb on the call. WHAT 2 WATCH 4 • UNT will begin its postseason against East Carolina on Monday night in the quarterfinals of the AAC Championship. • UNT's 23 wins this season is tied for the most in program history with last season's squad. • North Texas earned the No. 2 seed and a double bye to the quarterfinals at the AAC Tournament for a second consecutive season. • Tommisha Lampkin, Desiree Wooten and Aniyah Johnson represented UNT on the conference's postseason awards. POSTSEASON AWARDS • Tommisha Lampkin became the first UNT player to earn First Team all-conference honors since Terriell Bradley in 2017-18. • Lampkin was a unanimous selection to the All-AAC First Team by the league's coaches after leading the conference in double doubles, rebounding and FG%. She was the lone player in the conference to average a double double on the season. • Desiree Wooten earned the first all-conference honors of her career being named to the All-AAC Second Team and the All-AAC Defensive Team. The sophomore guard averaged 11.3 points per game, while ranking No. 3 in The American with 50 steals. • Aniyah Johnson joined Wooten on the league's All-Defensive Team in her senior year. She collected 176 rebounds on the season and was fourth in the AAC with 24 blocks during conference play.       UNT picked as top March Madness Cinderella candidate

      Wright has now proven he can score and carry the team when his shot is off (got to the line a ton vs Temple & second half numbers the last two games) but we will need to have BLo and Mou put up double doubles and then rest of the supporters drain keys shoots when open.

      Thinking about the Super Pit....

      It sucks but I doubt we'll ever be able to make significant changes that reduces seating capacity. The university will never allow it due to graduations. But a couple things we can address: - Like others have said, the lighting can look bad on TV. Just way too dark and drab. It might be due to where the cameras are stationed because I don't think its nearly as bad in person. - I'd love if we got rid of the old press seats at midcourt. It looks so odd and makes it seem like no one is there since people are behind the green partition.

      Thinking about the Super Pit....

      Don’t waste money on curtains. Just chain off the stairs with a sign saying “Section Closed”. There are ushers at every entrance. If fans go past the chains, they can instruct them to sit in the lower section. I’ve had season tickets for years and most games the upper deck is empty. When we do play a “big game”, there will be 200+ people sitting up there on both sides. The problem is that there are 4x’s that in empty seats in the lower bowl. It would look and sound better if the fans were together in the lower bowl.
