5 years of NCAA eligibility upon full time enrollment, 4 total in any one sport. Even if you exhaust your 4 years of eligibility in one sport, you can change to another sport for a year.

Right, but he has already used his redshirt. This is his 5th school year as a full-time student. Started at CMU in 2010-2011.

Might his 5th year end in December? Making him eligible for the regular season?

And then ineligible for a bowl because his 5th year ends when the semester is over, right?

He played 29 games during the 2010-2011 season for CMU which means he would've had to have played games in both semester. That may not be the end all be all for why he would or wouldn't be eligible, but this will be the end of his 5th school year (10th semester) as a full-time student).
