Football Team Addresses Needs With Eight Mid-Term Signees

DENTON - The North Texas football team bolstered its roster this week with the signing of eight players at the mid-term to National Letters of Intent.

The Mean Green strengthened both sides of the ball, adding two quarterbacks, two offensive lineman, two linebackers, one wide receiver and one defensive back to the roster.

"The bottom line is, we think we have some guys who will make an impact," North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. "We hope to have a class of 25 signees this year, and to get a third of them in here in January will be a major advantage."

When the 2015 class is completed, North Texas will have 85 scholarship players for the first time under McCarney.

Linebacker Cortney Finney is a transfer from Trinity Valley. He racked up a team-high 104 tackles and was named the SWJCFC 2014 Defensive Player of the Year. In 2014, he was named to the all-region team after recording 12 tackles for loss, three sacks, three passes broken up and one interception.

Defensive back James Gray had 60 tackles and four interceptions last season at Fort Scott, and was named an honorable mention JUCO All-American. Gray was a first-team All-Jayhawk Conference pick last season after he broke the Fort Scott record for most interceptions in a career with 11 in two seasons.

Brian Ochs was a key part of the Butler College offensive line that helped protect fellow a North Texas signee, quarterback DeMarcus Smith.

Smith passed for 2,746 yards and 31 touchdowns this past season at Butler Community College. He completed 58.5 percent of his passes, threw for five touchdowns in a game twice, and passed for four touchdowns three times.

Wide receiver Thaddeous Thompson had 42 catches for 642 yards and seven touchdowns in nine games at Scottsdale CC. He had four catches in eight of the nine games in which he played and had a season-high 124 yards and two touchdowns against Pima CC.

Linebacker Dakota Smith played two years at Trinity Valley CC after a successful career at Plano East High School. He helped Trinity Valley to a perfect 12-0 season in 2014, including a win in the Heart of Texas Bowl. Smith was committed to UAB before that program was shut down following the 2014 season.

In addition to the junior-college transfers, two high school players have signed with North Texas at the mid-term.

Offensive lineman Creighton Barr was a unanimous District 6-6A first-team selection his senior season at Marcus High School in Flower Mound. He was rated a three-star player by 247Sports.com, and was a District 5-5A honorable-mention selection as a junior.

Caleb Chumley was rated a three-star quarterback by Rivals.com. Chumley missed most of his senior season due to injury, but split time at quarterback and wide receiver. As a junior, he caught seven passes for 109 yards, but in the final three games of the season he threw for 832 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing for 305 yards and five touchdowns.

Didn't know Barr was going to be a mid-term guy. Congrats to him on graduating early and getting in here.

Same here. Great news to have him early. We may really need him next season to step in quickly. Even if he redshirts at least we don't have to worry about losing him.
