"He was verbally committed to Louisville for much of his high school career but ended up signing with Central Florida, although he never played there. He then went to WKU, redshirted in 2012 and saw action in five games in 2013 before transferring to Butler CC this past summer."

Very intriguing news. Looking forward to seeing the young man compete for the starting job....

They guy is listed at 6'1". Maybe Mac has turned over a new leaf regarding QB requirements?

Nice pickup, IMO. Lots of potential. Was KState offering him as well? Just read some interesting comments on twitter. Hoosiers were also recruiting him, according to another article.....

So does this mean the thought Greer never seeing the field here again (Mac's eternal doghouse) and DW transferring out may indeed become reality?

uh... are we going through some kind of change in our offensive philosophy?

i didnt see this guy under center for one snap... which to my recollection is a pretty big deal for our offense

Smith looks to be patient in the pocket but with the sort of awareness to get his feet moving without tucking the ball away and trying to make yards on his own. I like that even on the run, he's still checking his pass progression. Hell, it looks like he can improvise when he needs to -that play at 3:21 looked like a disaster in waiting but turned into a huge gain. I also know this goes without saying, but this guy has some miracle legs on him too. I'd like to see how spring turns out. Maybe Smith starts and brings us success while DW improves and maybe shapes up to be as good as we all like to think he is.

Sidenote - can we get a look at some of his WR corps?

I know there is a lot of debate over the star-rating system, but someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is the first "4-star recruit" North Texas football has ever had. Riley and Brock Berglund were both 3-stars on Rivals despite their hype and those are the closest two I can remember.

There is a difference between signing a 4 star HS recruit our of HS and picking up a former 4 star HS recruit out of JUCO or transfer. I think the only 4 star recruit we landed out of HS at their position was JaMario. JaMario was a **** that got bumped to a *** by some agencies when he signed with us, but others kept him at ****.

Cam Montgomery was **** JUCO RB.

We're going back to that 2011 dual-threat class (albeit, a little higher up the list). The same one that had Berglund ranked with Golston & Manziel.
It also has Braxton Miller, Brett Hundley, JW Walsh, & Teddy Bridgewater. And look who is #12 (1 spot below Smith): Marcus Mariota. Nice class!

I don't think they had a * rating back then but in 1978 Milton Collins (Blooming Grove) was probably our most celebrated recruit coming out of HS. According to my 78 pocket media guide, Collins was labeled by experts as the best RB coming out of a Texas HS since Earl Campbell. He also made at least one HS all-american team.

And this is odd. According to the media guide, Collins signed with NT AFTER he had signed a SWC letter of intent with A$M. I've never heard of a conference letter of intent.

addendum: Also in that signing class was a TE out of San Marcos named Mark Witte.

wasn't one of the Feldt's a 4 star? wasn't Anthony Wallace a 4 Star?

i'm sure there have been others

Yup, Anthony Wallace for sure which makes me even more weary about the star-rating system. Sounds like there has only been a handful-- transfer, JuCo & High School combined. Definitely the highest-rated QB we have ever landed, but I'm just curious to know why he has been passed up & transferred so many times. Academics?

This worries me a little bit. There have been success stories with this type of path through college, but I think most don't have a happy ending.

Also the offensive lineman that transferred from Arkansas that never cracked the 2 deep. Signed his brother out of high school, but he never made it on the field due to injury and was out of the program either after a year or before even getting to campus.

Their names escape me.

As Cerebus stated, big difference between signing a 4 star out of high school and getting a JUCO or transfer 4 star.

Also, Tyler Stradford was another 4 star transfer from OU that was fast as lightening but couldn't catch a football.

We have had many of these types over the years. A few successes and a lot of meh.

Hoping for the best here.

Yep. & Army All-American.
