Chad Reese always thought there'd be another game.

Another school. Another opportunity.

After leaving Wyoming, Reese transferred to North Texas, hoping to rebuild his football career in the state where it all began. Instead, because of complications in transferring financial aid to his new school, he couldn't buy books for more than a month. His grades nosedived. His new team suddenly became his old one.

North Texas cut Reese on Feb. 28.

The same belief that had once carried the undersized safety to Laramie was irreparably shaken. Maybe his career was over. Maybe the dream was really a mirage.

“All my life I was told I was too short, too small," Reese said. "‘He can’t play DI ball. He’s too small to be a safety.’ Again, it was just another man telling me something I couldn’t do.

"And at that time I was at a point where I was thinking, ‘Maybe I can’t.’”

In the wake of his dismissal, Reese began to crumble. Instead of withdrawing from classes, he simply stopped attending them, took failing grades and drifted away. He dropped weight, stopped training.

He didn't lose his identity as much as he impassively surrendered it.
