The New York Times has used Facebook like data and zip codes to create a college football fan map that shows which areas like which teams.

If you zoom in close enough, you can hover over an area to see the percentages of fan support.

The paper reports, "All told, 84 programs can reasonably claim to be the most popular college football team somewhere in the United States."

The off-white spot in Denton shows how close UNT came to being one of them.

I just noticed that this is from October. For some reason it's back on the NYT sports front page at its website.

Speaking of the Ducks, their footprint on this map is at least triple USC's. Eyeopening.

That really, really surprised me. I grew up in Northern California, and the Ducks weren't even in my consciousness. It was all Cal and Stanford, and to a lesser extent, UC Davis (then in D2). I guess long-term success coupled with aggressive Nike marketing does wonders.
