I think this thread did a good job of exposing our problem as a message board; at certain point we are all emotional buyers hoping for things to change so there are more entertainment buyers, which in turn validates our early emotional buy in.

My emotional buy-in is tempered by the realities of modern college football and the history of this specific program.

Get to a bowl 1 out of every 3 seasons. That sets up getting to a bowl 3 out of every 5 seasons and competing for conference championship on a regular basis.

uhhh...yeah 3 out of 5 given that they go bowling that fifth season. But it also sets us up for failure (better than our current average; kill me) in the long term.

The University of North Texas should be beating 75% of the conference every. single. year. That should be our norm, not our exception(al) season. We are further along in every aspect in terms of athletics (facilities, support, attendance, etc.) and academics (enrollment, degree options, academic facilities, etc.) than 75% of our conference foes. 3-9, 4-8, 5-7 seasons should be rare air around here. 7-5 should be the bottom line expectation year in and year out with better years sprinkled in, but also SOME 4-8 years sprinkled in as well.

The scheduling debacle is making 7-5 an even more difficult task than it already is. We are 1-2 in 2015 and the 2014 season isn't even completely over yet. So we have to win 5/9 to become bowl eligible and in reality 6/9 to solidify a bowl appearance.

Can this roster/coaching staff realistically win 6/9?

That's a very reasonable and rational target. Setting a silly, unattainable target doesn't help anything! And once we have achieved a target of bowls 3 out of every 5 years for a decade or more, then we can discuss a higher target. Nothing is static. No one is up or down forever without change!

If the worst thing that happens in life is that the college football team you follow doesn't win very often, then your life is probably pretty good. It's not reason to wish for death. It's not reason to fornicate with your existence.

It's a game. Entertainment. Diversion.

This is not life or death, and it really never should be.

Kind of just a saying. Frustration is mounting and it's apparent. The problem is that the only frustration mounting is external when it should be internal, at the highest of levels.

Oh! that's right. You didn't grow up in Texas. ...... ;)

That did make me laugh. Touche!

I wonder if you would say that about your undergrad's college baseball program if they sucked for 9 out of 10 seasons...

The sad thing is that the administration at UNT has proven to have this exact same attitude.

Worse, my undergrad's baseball program was cut for ten years.

Pretty unrealistic expectaions across the board. Your asking for a winning record every season.

No mid-major coaching staff can do that. If they did they would be picked up a P5 school.

So you really think that there is no "internal" frustration about a 4-8 football season? I am asking you specifically Ben Gooding. You really really think that anyone on the second floor of the athletic center is content with 4-8? What exactly to you want them to say?

How about more than 1 winning record every 10 seasons?

No one who has ever had a conversation with RV could believe he is happy after a 4-8 season. I've only seen Coach Mac from afar, but I can't believe he is happy with these results either.

Wait - not defending it - but wasn't the whole point of the RT to take a swipe at the prez and spotlight his quote rather than slap him on the back for it?

I know that it eats at Dan McCarny something fierce--I think his coaches and players feel that way, too. And RV, as well. But they aren't the ones to ask about the question.

I know that the BOR and administration of the university don't care...or else your guy, RV, would've been axed years ago for his poor hires.

Ding. Ding. Ding. That's where it all starts. If they always sit back and accept what is going on then we will always be running in place. We need a BOR that needs to have some wherewithal about them and start making executive decisions.

We already have that BOR you speak of...they just don't care about athletics enough to make it the priority that other universities do. That's your problem--an unfixable one, I might add, until a pro-athletics mindset is shown by the funding decisions of the BOR. Seeing how we haven't ever had that in Denton (since 1890) and we continue to place a great premium on being a "value" university, I wouldn't expect it to change in our lifetime. Frankly, it shocks me that football has survived at this place for as long as it has. Apogee still just boggles my mind that it got approved, funded, and built.

Got approved by the students then the damn BOR and Lee Jackson screwed the fans by going behind the backs and limiting the fee, unlike any other University in Texas. Just pathetic impotent leadership right now over the entire UNT System

Not so sure I am hung up about the fees as I used to be. The heavy fee schools seems to be the ones predicted to follow in UAB's football demise footsteps...

Would love to have more revenue but not if it means we might see a "Dear Mean Green Family" letter anytime soon!
