I think many of us could handle the losses, if the losses were competitive. Outside of the UTSA game lost at the end, the rest of the losses were multiple kicks to the nuts and not fun to watch. Hell forget FCS teams and bring in P5's and if the team is very competitive at least the hope is there that the team can compete versus the false hope we got from kicking the sh*t out of a Nicholls State team that was coming off the loss of their coach.

It is not so much the losses but the type of losses that hurts the fan base, everyone was excited when we went toe to toe with K State, when the team lost a heart breaker in OT to Ohio, even the loss last year to UGA showed tons of heart and hope, but the getting blown out by UTEP, UAB, and Rice are should never happen NOW. Same holds true in Basketball, be competitive.

Lots of good posts in here that pretty much nail my sentiments. The day I went from emotional donor to buyer has not yet arrived, even though my brain tells me I'm an idiot. The day almost came during the infamous Todd Dodge double timeout that led to a blocked field goal and subsequent comeback win by Army. I lost my sh!t that day and didn't want to ever see another game coached by the man---even though I ultimately did b/c I just can't give this stuff up.

UNT90 is a beating on this board with the near constant negative posts, but I have to say---on his major/favorite rant, I agree. It's echoed in this thread, over and over. It's time for a change in the AD. We've made enormous strides in the last 15 years, and I credit RV, along with the BOR and the past 3 Presidents (Pohl, Battaille, Rawlins). But our win/loss record in the three major sports is just flat out pathetic over the past 8 years. To be totally honest, it's been pathetic much longer than that. We are spending enough as an Athletic department to demand better. It has helped us reach a point where we are top 3 in CUSA in revenue, but we have rarely finished that high on the field. Something has to change.

This is actually the day where I did turn it off for good. I banged my giveaway construction helmet so hard on the metal bleachers that little kids were looking at me like I was a lunatic. Which I was. So I made the decision to dial it back and enjoy the game day for its own sake.

This is the best topic I've ever seen on this board, so many well thought out posts. Nice job....

So much frustration and obvious pain being felt by this fanbase. I am also in the camp that a strong heartfelt thanks needs to be sent to RV with the acceptance of a resignation letter. The nepotism of the AD in combination with the failures in selecting coaches has added up to a level of being unforgivable.

To see so many fans feel exactly the way I do (apathetic) is tearing me up. If it is happening to the diehards then the level of apathy among the casual fans has to be through the roof.

I feel that the season ticket sales will show this next year and it will be an undeniable black eye on AD. Hopefully to the point where there is a new regime installed. Smatresk was applauded by all of the coaches at UNLV for hiring an internal person to take over the AD. She is a graduate of the school and a diehard sports fan. Time will tell how she pans out but count me in again on wanting our AD Leadership to be at least partially comprised of persons who are AT LEAST somehow related to this area.

Nah, ticket sales are already a black eye. Why do you think the numbers don't get released?

I'm glad others are starting to call for RV to be gone. I feel the best way to vote displeasure is with the pocketbook, and after the first season of Benford ball, I stopped donating and buying season tickets, I'll be back when RV is gone.

I'm a very young fan, just graduated this past May of 2014 with a B.S. in logistics and supply chain management degree!! and i was expecting a lot from this program to the extend that I put "Why not North Texas?" statement inside of my class ring that costed me more than $400 :( and i honestly regretted it.

I'm not expecting us to win the national championship but at least be competitive in C-USA, not getting blown out by a program that is going to close soon or getting beat by a program that just started football 4 years ago.

All the excitement are gone now around the school.

students are disappointed.

And despite the lack of talent in our time, everyone knows that the play calling were awful (coaching staff are not doing their job correctly)

Mac has nothing more to add to this program obviously.

I'll be gone as a fan for awhile until we do the right things here at North Texas.

If you're like the rest of us, you will go through periods where that decision was the best you ever made and periods where it was the worst. But mostly worst.

16 year periods of regret interspersed with 5 year periods of feeling pretty good.

IMO the ticket is long term success. I would rather have 5 or 6 seasons that we go 8-4, 9-3 or 10-3 (champ game) than 1 season at 12-0. As soon as you hit the bottom the following season your accomplishments disappear. You establish yourself, get some conference championships, win bowls. Thats how you change perception and reputation.

We also need the leadership both on the staff and in the athletic department. That is a huge piece of the puzzle.

All good comments. Most of which I agree.

I can't help but wonder if the Athletic Department leadership is at work right now.....feeling the pressure of the failures of the past 10+ years. (some successes yes but majority failures)

My guess is it's business as usual....

That's the part that has me worried.

I don't want to add to the sombre nature of the thread, but I feel compelled to thanks to the thoughtfulness of so many of these comments.

UNT as an institutional entity and the UNT System as a whole find themselves in exceptionally trying times right now. I know that we are here to focus on UNT athletics, but most, if not all of us are also UNT alums.

I think we're getting "business as usual" from Athletics because of the bigger picture of uncertainty and challenge that UNT is facing as an institution. Hell, right now no one knows how much $ we're going to owe the state of Texas over what time period thanks to the malfeasance of the former employees of the UNT Budget Office. UNT was already in a tight jam before the Budget Office disaster. Now? I don't think anyone knows, and that should frighten all of us.

This was a great thread--full of very insightful and emotional points about what the losing has done to us. I used to be so mad at those alums from the 80s and 90s that just abandoned UNT, except for the degree, and followed their favorite P5 giant, exclusively as "their" team. The graduates of the 00's and 10's, though, gave me reason to believe that things had finally reached a point where we had a decent fanbase to build from, numbers-wise. But its the losing our ass to P5 heaveyweights in the first part of every season, the playing of poor OOC home opponents, a dull-ass gameplan that puts people to sleep (ala Dickey), and now basketball is right where it was in before JJ got things rolling here...I'm very concerned that without changes higher up the foodchain than at head coach, these newer graduates who are pouring money into season tickets, donations, and apparel are about to start dropping like flies. I can tell you this much--there may be a few more fans like GrayEagle, SilverEagle, PMG, SUMG, FFR, or others like them in this next wave of fairly-recent alums, but if the school isn't gonna try an win at revenue sports, in another couple of decades, we will have people saying the same things about the graduates of the oo's and 10's as we are saying about those from the 80s and 90s-- where did they go and how can we get them back? The answer is very, very clear, for 99% of those people, once you let them go or they decide to go, they don't come back. They become T-shirt Longhorns, Sooners, Aggies, Red Raiders, etc...

$78 million dollars...

The program has become irrelevant to recruits and fans alike.

Sadly, what I want for this program and what I've grown to expect from this program get further and further apart every day that the current AD is allowed to keep a $350k a year job while producing very very little about which one could get excited.

And I don't expect things to change. It's what UNT does and has done for years.

Ever consider that the alums that did leave and not come back are just smarter than we are?

UNT90 = Cato to Elder. Cato ended every speech in the Roman Senate with "furthermore it is my opinion that Carthage must be destroyed." UNT90 now converts every thread on every subject to why RV must be fired!

Plenty of people have made the case here for a change to be made at the top after 14 years.

What's the case for no change?

What has this regime shown to convince anyone that UNT Athletics can take the next step?

Just an honest question.

Good question.

Disgusting side note-- If SMwho hangs on to get this W vs UCONN an argument could be made that this ONE win (1-11) season could be more impactful for them than our 9-4 (bowl "championship") season. Basically based on the up coming coaching change and a lot of people (recruits and media outlets) with eyes on them.

North Texas has to do better and that betterment has to start this offseason.

Or he could be the sixth SMU coach in a row who can't succeed there and leaves with a losing record. I bet people here were freaking out about the June Jones hire in 2008. How'd that work out for them? They have enough problems winning since the death penalty that UNT fans should stop freaking out at the prospect they'll get good again.
