I'm with Rick: my preference would be a proven up-and-comer. A proven assistant at an FCS perennial playoff contender or the like.

These guys that come from the lavish P5 programs, I respect their skins and don't question their x-and-os...but I tire of hearing people on our staff pooing on our budget/history.

Johnson was a trainwreck as a HC (5-6 @Gardner-Webb, 12-22 at The Citadel, 0-12 at Southern Miss)

He has been a DC at several big schools but his defense has under performed more than over performed.

He does have a good reputation as a recruiter and that is what has gotten him jobs.

How about the buffalo hire of Leipold from D3 Wisconsin Whitewater to Buffalo. Interested to see how that works for him.

Auburn: Per source, defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson is leaving the staff. There are some big names that could be in play to fill this position.

Johnson Bio

Interesting how that bio mentions an impressive turnaround as DC, but doesn't mention the "turnaround" in his year as head coach at Southern Miss. Still, it makes you wonder about people who make these decisions, that USM hired him after a history of losing seasons at FCS programs. Like "hey, those were tough places to win".

The thing is, our crack AD would see Johnson as an excellent replacement for DMac (if we had a HC position open) 'cause Johnson came from big time Auburn. Forget his previous records or gigs. Benf'ord.

D3. Just a step above high school. Don't think we want to go that route.

The guy is a proven winner, think I would take him in a heartbeat.

While at Nebraska, Leipold worked with Turner Gill, who preceded Quinn at Buffalo, leading the Bulls to a Mid-American Conference championship and their first bowl game before leaving to coach at Kansas.
