Let me first say I wish Coach Skladany the very best and thank him for his contributions over the last 3 years. He is a good man and coach; our program is better for having him here.

Now Mac needs to move quickly to replace him. This doesn't need to take a couple of months...we need to finish recruiting strong and the defensive prospects need to know who their future leader will be.

I have been very clear that any staff changes should be focused around how we can improve the recruiting opportunities we have sitting here in the DFW metroplex.

Here is a list of the top recruiters in the country according to the NFL...let me preface this with this list is all from big time p5 programs and I know we will most likely not attract a top assistant away from these types of programs and salaries etc... My point is they have common threads...ties to the high schools, young, energetic, hungry for success...you get the picture:

If this guy is already on our staff (Kevin Patrick) so be it. If not let's go find him. It may be a coach rising in the FCS ranks... Perhaps a young assistant at a bigger program who is looking for a chance to be DC.

My understanding is that in his heyday John Skladany was a great recruiter but most recently has not been on the road recruiting here at UNT. I do not think we have the luxury of having one of our top paid assistants not recruiting athletes going forward. In fact, all of our top paid positions should understand that a big component of your job is to help us attract the best talent.

One other thought... We should do everything we can to keep Tommy Perry on this staff. He's been an outstanding recruiter and one of the best special teams coaches we have ever had. It may not matter because if an SEC program hires him we may not be able to match but I hope we do not lose him to a g5...

2014 was a tough year but the good news is with the right hires we can right this ship pretty quickly. This is a perfect time to address areas where the program can improve and make adjustments to make things better. GMG

A DC that will play 50/50 press, blitz unpredictably (or in our case at all) and put pressure on the offensive game plan of the opposing team. That's all I ask for and I don't care who it is. Schematically we are too soft and in reality were too soft last year as well.

If Perry is that important to this program, promote him to DC. He has a defensive background and has proven he can coach any position thrown at him.

Harry, keep in mind that almost every position coach wants to advance, with the end goal being a head coach. It doesn't matter that a position coach will make more money at a P5 in his current job than we will pay him as a DC. At least not to most. The end goal is to be a head coach, and there are only 125 of those jobs available in the world. Pretty tight job market.

Plus, the DC candidate can look at Mac's age and realize that he will probably only coach to the end of his current contract. If he does his job, he will be in a prime position to be elevated to the head coaching position at UNT.

+1. +10,000 if I could.

Ditto. One of the bright spots this year was Special Teams, and if you look at our success last year, even the extra value of a better (and healthier) defense probably wouldn't have put us over the top if ST wasn't so awesome. Perry has got to get the recognition he deserves in every way (including the checkbook) or we can kiss him goodbye.

Bo Pelini? (not gonna happen)

Mark Snider? (Long Shot but better shot)

I was thinking about Mark Snyder too. He'd have to take a big paycut from his nearly 1 million a year at A&M but thats not out of the question anyways considering the job he did at A&M. He clearly wasn't cut out to be a DC at a SEC school but he could be very good at the G5 level.

guys.....it all depends on their buyout and contract language. Most every coach that gets fired or has years left on their contract are owed a certain amount. For kicks and giggles lets say it is 1 Million per year for 3 years. Then he comes to UNT and we pay him 150,000 a year for 3 years. He would be owed 850,000 a year per year for 3 years by whatever school said candidate came from. Hope that clears the water a little.

If we moved Perry up, I think some of you could quit worrying about DL recruitment, seeing as how most if not all of the big time recruits we got were Perry guys.

Why would the original school not owe him the entire 1 million? If it was me I would just take 3 years off spend the time with my family making 1 million doing NOTHING.

I like to see MAC go get Bill Clark the UAB coach, and then name him the tag as the coach once Mac leaves.

Hey, let Mac become the new DC (he has a Championship ring you know!), then make Bill Clark the HC...all problems solved...except QB, DL, etc..

It's pretty standard for these contracts to have a reduction clause where the payoff is reduced by the amount the coach makes at his/her new job.
