Steelers to retire #75 tonight

was just watching the Fox NFL pre-game show and Terry Bradshaw was talking about Joe. Howie Long said that back in his playing days, he shared an apartment with Cedrick Hardman & Joe came over to visit Cedrick on the Sunday before a Monday night Steeler-Raiders game. Howie said that was an honor sitting there talking with Joe & he picked #75 because of Mean Joe Greene.

As much as I've always hated the Steelers, this is great. I do wonder about the timing. Why now?

The Steelers don't officially retire jerseys. Think of all the Steelers greats from the 70's . . . Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Jack Lambert . . . none of them have had their jerseys retired, not officially. Only Ernie Stautner has had his jersey retired. That ought to say something about what a tremendous honor this is.

It may indeed be a great honor, but that doesn't answer my question about why now?

" Really coming into this year with Joe retiring and coming up on the 40th anniversary of the first Super Bowl (victory), we felt it was a perfect time. We talked about it and came to the decision that it was the right thing to do (and) the right time to do it. "

Was he employed by the Steelers? If so, then I guess that makes sense.

From Dan Rooney....

Re: Timing of jersey retirement: “He was a lot like Ernie Stautner, (who) was the first (to have his jersey retired). Stautner was tremendous, a great player, but a different era. What it means to us, what it means to the team, what it means to the city and everything else. I am so happy we are honoring Joe this way.”

Generic slap on the back talk. All of those laudatory things were true when he was inducted into the Pro Football HOF back in 1987.
