BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- When Tony Benford arrived at North Texas two seasons ago to coach the Mean Green's men's basketball team, he scanned the rosters of his soon-to-be Conference USA rivals.

"I looked at my assistant coaches and said, 'Wow, there are lot of high-major guards in this league,' " said Benford, who had been an assistant at Marquette. "They can be playing in the Big East; that's how good they are."

Conference USA has indeed become a guard-dominated league. Look no further than the preseason all-conference team, where seven guards were voted to the 10-player unit.

"We've got more teams committed to getting up and down the floor in Conference USA," Charlotte 49ers coach Alan Major said on Wednesday at the conference's media day. "And you've got to have great guards to do that."

Major noticed that style of play two summers ago after Charlotte left the Atlantic 10 and was preparing for its return to C-USA, where the 49ers played from 1995-2005. It included three, sometimes four, guards on the floor and smaller, more athletic forwards than what Charlotte was used to seeing in the A-10.

This would be the year for Coach Benford to turn the corner, JJ got things going in year three so let's see what happens. GMG

This has to be the year. Yes there are some question marks for next year, but this year we need to win. If we cannot turn it around when Reese is eligible then Benford needs to go.

It would have to be a brutal, under 10 wins kind of season for Benford to get fired--if that. He has two years left, bare minimum, to turn this around. Here's the scary thought--he has another mediocre season this year, then follows it up in 2016 with another .500 or close to it season. I know he'll have one year on his contract, but you will never see a coach go into his last year of a contract anymore--he'll either get fired or extended. Knowing what we know, I can easily see Benford getting an extension, unless he has a horrible season in the next two years. When you look at the schedule, getting to 10 wins shouldn't be too hard, so if he gets to 15 wins in his 4th year, I'd almost be certain that he will get a two-to-three year extension with that kind of "success" and with RV being his AD. Think about that ridiculousness...

Benford getting extended after 2 .500 season following the crap first 2 years of his regime would kill my support for UNT basketball until RV is no longer AD.

Again, why should I care when UNT doesn't?

According to your endless upon endless posts saying the exact same thing, it seems you currently do not support UNT Basketball....or did I miss the fact that you were purchasing season tickets for this year? How do you support UNT basketball by claiming you will not show up at any games, not buy season tickets and by ragging on everything that is associated with UNT basketball on a constant basis?

With that kind of support UNT basketball does not need any enemies. Just asking of course.

I will always support UNT sports (especially basketball). I want them to succeed! We have some easy games in the scheduale but we have some very tough road games ahead. I am waiting to make judgment until I see Reese tuch the floor to see what he can do. Maybe he is the type of point guard who can help this team turn things around turn the end of this season and next season. This has yet to be seen.

The biggest enemy UNT basketball has sits in the AD's office.

I guess you're right. My one game a year support isn't much to end, but it will end.

From season ticket holder to nothing in 4 years...

Yes, the ad's office is purposefully running everything into the ground. Look forward to watching the clown show in person one time, always entertaining.

Sad to see you posting this way.

Gives people little hope for change.

Things were run into the ground. Does it really matter if it was purposeful or not?

Are you satisfied with the direction of the basketball program after the first two seasons of being coached by Tony Benford? If so, why? If not, what would make you tell the AD and the BOR that you are ready for a change?

Keith Coleman was supposed to be Big East caliber too.

I just realized that Benford did have a Big East player on the roster when he took over.

Sadly, he ran that player off to a JUCO before that player signed with DePaul.

I think it's safe to say Benford has no idea what a Big East player actually looks like.

I'm certainly no Benford defender, but I think Robinson was gone just before Jones left.
