And don't get me wrong, I don't see Andrew McNulty as the major part of the problems we face right now. It's just that we were beaten in every phase of the game by a team we dominated in every way last year, which was starting a freshman quarterback for the first time. I wish I could find some statistics for how he played last year, but Southern Miss lost by some really lopsided scores in the weeks following their loss to us by over 40 points, I believe.

My point is, they put some faith in a young quarterback who they knew was going to pay off for them down the road, and despite paying the price in losing some games by blowouts until the last game of the season, they stuck with him. Now that appears to be paying off for them, although their record isn't much better than ours so far (although 2 of their 4 losses are against Mississippi State and Alabama), they seem to be on the improve, and very important, they're improving at quarterback. I'm just trying to square that with our approach, and I know that no situation is exactly the same.

What I would like to see is DW getting some meaningful playing time in the remainder of the year, although that there is some possibility that McNulty gets us somewhat of a better chance at some wins. At some point, this team is going to have to go for it on 4th and 1 at the 40, and at some point, this team is going to have to go with a quarterback who has more potential along with more risk. Hey, if nothing else, have our backup quarterbacks do a few warmup throws from time to time, rather than having them just stand around when it looks questionable whether the starter can get back up and into the game again. And I do think that McNulty wasn't throwing as well when he went back in after being hurt (not that we had much chance at that point). Hey, if we're going to have a down year, let's at least look like we're more involved than the 16(?) redshirts on the roster from this year.

They were able to do this because they had come off a 0-12 season. Losing by 40 was barely a regression at that point. People will not have that kind of comprehension for a coaching crew coming of a 9-4 season.
