Should we be worried?

Okay so this is only me 2nd year to be a GMG addict. I keep my posts to a minimal only commenting when I see necessary. This is the first thread I believe I have ever started. I am more of the "fly on the wall" type of poster.

Should we be worried about the number of recruits we have currently verbally committed?? I really enjoy reading about the kids and the numbers they post in high school. I enjoy watching their HUDL film and such. But, the lack of activity in the UNT Football recruiting is worrisome.

I am the fan that sits in the endzone and can call out the players first name and where he went to High school the kids always give me some sort of shout out back at me.

I cannot speak with confidence on all of UNTs verbals but I feel pretty good for the future of the O-Line and the DBs that are verbals. Chet Munden (6'6' 310) Abdul Beecham(6'3' 290) Cody Wheeler (6'4' 295) Creighton Barr (6'3' 280) are all outstanding 3 star players (watch their Hudl film). Hopefully we offer and get a verbal from 6'6' 295 Dave Bolisomi (Denton Ryan) a real diamond in the rough. I cannot remember the local OL kid who did not pan out at Kansas I believe who will transfer and be eligible in 2015. The future UNT OL looks nice. I would like to see a little more size be recuited for DL and more explosive skill position players. I mentioned previously that UNT should look hard at some JUCO prospects who had D1 offers but fell short of required grades or SAT and went JUCO route. Here are a few that UNT should conisder:

I don't really think that we should have a great concern with the slowdown in recruiting at this stage. Most of the candidates are concerned with the season as well they should be. We could have some cause for alarm if we have a losing season.

Frankly, there is only one recruit that I would take today if I were the recruiting coordinator. The rest are either committed elsewhere or need this season to prove themselves. We only have 4-6 scholarships left to offer and we need to choose carefully. It's possible that one or two who are waiting for confirmation from P5 programs lose out to others and could then look to us. Even more likely is that some of these under the radar candidates have exceptional years and we see if we are still their #1 choice.

Although quality seems to have risen slightly with this class, there is still a concern with our recruiting ability. Until this staff has recruited a few all-conference players who are drafted we may struggle a little recruiting-wise.

GrayEagle: Is there a time that we look for "red flags" such as may have been there during the last two to three years of the Dickey era. Our program seemed to really breakdown back then, no red flags in recruiting?

I wish we could bring in about 4, top tier defensive linemen, plus a quarterback.

This class is pretty close to done so I don't see why there is an issue with our number of verbals.

GrayEagle: Is there a time that we look for "red flags" such as may have been there during the last two to three years of the Dickey era. Our program seemed to really breakdown back then, no red flags in recruiting?

The fall of the Dickey-era recruiting was largely due to the loss of Kenny Evans. Kenny was an excellent linebacker coach and a very good recruiter. We seldom knew what Darrell Dickey was doing because he would not announce commitments until the day of signing (with a few rare exceptions). After Coach Evans left the quality took a downturn.

Dodge actually did pretty well recruiting, especially considering lack of wins and poor facilities. McCarney's nine-win season was largely with Dodge recruits. But, as we found out, Dodge did not have the experience at the college level nor did he have the coaching staff to take advantage of the talent.

I believe that the primary recruiting problem under McCarney has been the lack of Texas connections with the recruiters. Our current coaches are good recruiters but it takes a while to build connections and rapport with the high school coaches. So far, it's been a slow process. The more winning seasons that we have and more longevity of our recruiters should lead to better talent.

Relationships with HS coaches is overrated. It's yet another scapegoat spewed out by our fan base bc of the rather poor recruiting Mac has done. Almost all production from last years squad was Dodge recruits. This year all of the production (or lack thereof) are Mac recruits. We say that Macs strong suit in coaching is development. Where is the development? He's been here 4 years. Everyone says we are a young team and to the extent of playing experience we are young, but it's not as if we are playing a bunch of true freshmen or sophomores. In our 2 deep depth chart there are 5 true sophomores, 2 of which are starters and both on defense. 1 RS Fr (DW), 0 true freshmen and the rest of our entire 2 deep are Jr's and Sr's. So, again, where is the development? If all of our stock is in development we need to pull our stock immediately. So IMO, we should be worried.

**Jeff Wilson is not listed in our 2 deep. Pleasant surprise and I hope he's ready to go by Oct. 18th.

**Our size on DL is mind boggling. We have a good rotation going and hopefully they get it together, but every single defensive linemen we have could put on a solid 20 pounds. And that's a problem.

Yes we should be worried, and this is not new. Year after year after year we are ranked by both Rivals and Scout in the bottom half of our own conference. You don't build programs with recruiting rankings consistently in the 100s.
