DALLAS – The three-time Conference USA champion UNT softball team was voted first in the league’s preseason poll, garnering nine of 10 first place votes and 99 points overall, the league announced on Thursday. The first-place preseason selection marks the third occasion in program history to enter the season as favorites and third in the past four seasons. North Texas senior Ashley Peters was named the C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year after a 20-win season last year. Peters becomes the second pitcher in program history to be awarded the superlative recognition after Hope Trautwein captured the honor in 2020 and 2021. The Mean Green also placed five players on the C-USA preseason team, the most in program history passing marks of three selections in 2019 and 2020. Peters joins catcher Kalei Christensen, infielder Kailey Gamble, outfielder Lexi Cobb and pitcher Skylar Savage as members of the all-conference squad. UNT had the most selections in the league with no other team having more than two honorees, which are selected by the conference’s head coaches. “It’s good to see some of our players get recognized because they work hard and are very deserving,” head coach Rodney DeLong said. “We have a tough schedule and a competitive league to compete against so preseason polls don’t mean a lot to us. We have to work hard and stay tough through the course of the season to be successful. We are excited about this team and the opportunities that are in front of us.” UNT will begin its season at the Buzz Classic in Atlanta with a doubleheader on Feb. 10 against UIC and Saint Francis before meeting UConn and hosts Georgia Tech to wrap up the weekend. 2023 C-USA Softball Preseason Poll 1. Daktronics of Brookings, South Dakota, has partnered with the University of North Texas to design, manufacture and install a new LED video display and audio system at Lovelace Stadium in Denton, Texas. The system was installed early in 2022 and is currently enhancing the game-day experience for the Mean Green. “We are always pleased to work with Daktronics on projects like this, and the new video board at Lovelace Stadium surpassed our expectations in its first season,” UNT Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “The addition of the video board added tremendously to our fan and student-athlete experience this year, and we look forward to continuing to invest in our softball facilities in the future.” read more: https://www.sportsvideo.org/2022/07/10/improved-audiovisual-experience-delivered-to-north-texas-softball-from-daktronics/

Sarah Barker is headed to Houston. Here’s the interesting aspect of what Barker had to say … “Incredibly blessed to say that I will be continuing my softball career at the University of Houston. Every journey has a few bumps along the road, and one of mine will be sitting out this season due to not getting my release to play; but I am extremely grateful to have such a wonderful opportunity to finish my career so close to home and with a great program! Go Coogs!⚾️” read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2015/07/former-unt-softball-player-lands-at-houston-helmets-and-heels-tomorrow.html/

DENTON, Texas -- "Can you hold that not so close to your face? Thank you." Layton Foster furrowed his eyebrows at the request from his mother, and the almost angelic patience he had displayed for the better part of the past hour dissipated ever so slightly into the stubbornness more readily associated with a 4-year-old boy, especially one who had recently skipped his regular afternoon nap. He grudgingly moved the tablet in his hands an almost imperceptible distance from his face and continued to play a video game. "Hey," came his mom's voice, and the sudden sharpness of that word conveyed a note of warning. "Not so close to your face." Her patience tried, he did as she said without further complaint and resumed his wait. read more: http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/10754965/espnw-north-texas-mean-green-senior-brooke-foster-plays-son

LAFAYETTE, La. - T.J. Hubbard, former head coach at North Texas, who won 161 games in six seasons will be joining the Ragin' Cajuns softball coaching staff as an assistant coach, as announced by head coach Michael Lotief. The hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. "I'm grateful and thankful for [Lotief] giving me the opportunity," Hubbard said. "The rich history that [Louisiana] has had in the Sun Belt conference and in post season is exciting to be apart of." "T.J. and I have a long relationship." Lotief said of the hiring. "We had a respect for each other, not only in terms of coaching and competing against each other, but philosophically. We saw a lot of the aspects of the game the same way." Hubbard spent the last 10 years with North Texas, starting as an assistant coach in 2003 for the schools first team, before taking over as head coach for six years from 2007-13. While at the helm of the Mean Green softball program, Hubbard became the all-time leader in wins, and posted the two best-winning seasons in school history. He finished with a 161-161-1 record. read more: http://www.katc.com/news/cajuns-softball-hires-former-unt-head-coach-tj-hubbard/#_
