The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has partnered with The University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) to provide a unique Master of Business Administration degree program with an Economic Development emphasis. USM officials hope the new program will help elevate the University’s profile in the Lone Star state. “Texas is a state with a growing demand for economic developers and many alums, including those from our MSED program have been moving to Texas,” said Dr. Chad Miller, Master of Science of Economic Development Program Director at USM. “Texas does not have an established graduate program in the practice of economic development and Southern Miss has the first, and best known, program.” The joint graduate-level program begins in the Fall 2023 semester and will be taught in a hybrid format. It is a 30-hour program that can be completed in three semesters. Students who successfully finish the program will earn an MBA with a concentration in economic development from UNT Dallas and a graduate certificate in economic development from USM. read more: https://www.usm.edu/news/2023/release/unt-dallas-usm-mba.php

A partnership between the University of North Texas at Dallas and Sunset High School will award the entire senior class with automatic admission into the university. Sunset High School Principal Jesus Martinez was joined by UNT Dallas Administrators during a senior class meeting Thursday night to announce the new program, “Trailblazer Express,” to parents. Prior to March 1, all seniors will receive an email and physical letter announcing their acceptance into the University, said Jose da Silva, Interim Vice President of UNT Dallas. “I’m a first generation college student and I still remember way back when my friends were going to college and I didn’t know where to start. Just the fear of being rejected was enough to keep me from applying,” da Silva said. “I know my story is not unique… we want to eliminate that fear as a barrier.” Martinez said the automatic admission will remove other barriers for students and parents too, including those involving the application process. read more: https://oakcliff.advocatemag.com/2023/01/unt-dallas-sunset-partnership/

The southern region of Dallas is getting its largest mixed-use project yet, thanks to a home-town developer. Dallas developer Hoque Global is planning to build a 270-acre mixed-use project next to the campus of the University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas), according to a press release. The planned community will include residential properties and commercial buildings, as well as green space, the Dallas Culture Map reports, and will be the first large-scale mixed-use community of its kind in the southern Dallas area. “We hope University Hills will be the first of many community-driven and neighborhood-building developments bringing much needed quality jobs and housing for the area to grow,” said Hoque Global CEO Mike Hoque in a press release. read more: https://therealdeal.com/texas/2022/06/08/hoque-dallas-partner-on-270-acre-development-near-unt-dallas-campus/

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sooner Athletic Conference commissioner Stan Wagnon announced on Tuesday (June 9) afternoon that the University of North Texas at Dallas has been extended and accepted an invitation for Sooner Athletic membership, increasing the league's membership to 12 institutions. "UNT Dallas has demonstrated a sincere commitment toward establishing a successful athletics program," admitted Wagnon. "It's a tremendous opportunity for the Sooner Athletic Conference to come alongside the university, President Mong and his team in forming a mutually beneficial partnership." While spending the 2020-21 season as an associate member, UNT Dallas will be eligible for full membership the following academic year. The Trailblazers were approved for associate NAIA membership by the Council of Presidents (COP) back on March 31. "We are enthusiastic about being invited into the Sooner Athletic Conference," UNTD President Bob Mong noted. "The SAC not only provides UNT Dallas with instant local rivalries, but also with a reliable set of strong competition around the region." "The SAC will be a great home for us," UNTD Athletic Director Jack Allday added. "I also think UNTD will bring a lot to the conference with our Dallas location and rapid growth. We'll have two local rivalries in Texas Wesleyan and Southwestern Assemblies of God. It's a good fit all the way around." UNTD has been actively preparing to launch its athletic program, hiring former Dallas Mavericks standout Josh Howard to coach its men's basketball team, ex-Plano High School (Texas) coach Rodney Belcher as women's basketball head coach, and Kenneth Royal, former Roosevelt and Madison High School (Texas) coach, to head the men's and women's cross country and track programs. With the addition of the Trailblazers, the SAC increases its footprint in the state of Texas to four institutions, including Wayland Baptist University. The conference awards championships in 14 sports (seven men and seven women). Men's championships feature football, cross country, basketball, baseball, golf, soccer and wrestling. Women's championships include volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, golf and wrestling. read more: http://www.victorysportsnetwork.com/Clip/news/unt-dallas-becomes-newest-sooner-athletic-conference-member.htm

Its been 13 years since the city of Dallas bought 200 acres to seed what would become the University of North Texas at Dallas. UNT Dallas has slowly found its footing in southeast Oak Cliff and is beginning to do what we all hoped it might become a catalyst for economic improvement in this almost rural part of the city. The schools presence hasnt created waves of change. Its easy to forget its there, tucked away in just a few buildings on what is now a 246-acre campus just northeast of the intersection of Interstate 20 and Interstate 35E. The temptation might be to suggest that UNT Dallas isnt delivering. Thats the wrong impression. The school is growing at a good clip, with 2,600 full-time students. Pending legislative funding, a student center and a library will sprout. A new residence hall should be complete in 2016. Meanwhile, significant development interest is growing nearby. The next leader of the University of North Texas at Dallas sees students spending time in companies and not just classrooms. “I want every undergraduate to have experience with this city outside the walls of the university,” said Ronald Brown, who will become UNT-Dallas president in July. That means students working with local employers, from hospitals to accounting firms to nonprofits, as they earn related degrees. Brown recently shared his priorities for Dallas’ newest public university, which began as a branch of UNT in Denton in 2000. Enrollment has grown from a few hundred students to more than 2,000. It’s a mix of recent high school graduates and older adults and of full-time and part-time students. Beyond working with companies to give students practical experience, Brown listed four other priorities for UNT-Dallas over the next few years: Offer more classes taught partly on campus and partly online, in ways that students benefit from technology. Track every student’s progress toward graduation through careful advising and other support to make them successful. Expand course offerings for freshmen and sophomores so they can meet general education requirements; and focus on degrees in high-demand fields such as accounting, health care, computer science and information management. Build dorms so that students can live on campus. Read more: http://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/headlines/20130401-new-leader-for-the-university-of-north-texas-at-dallas-lays-out-goals.ece

“It’s the direction of education,” Brown said after Thursday’s presentation. “It’s the direction of economic development. It’s the future — and it’s actually current in most cities and most institutions reinvesting and working in their core where they have their infrastructure. If you go and develop a green field you have to extend infrastructure. If you move downtown the infrastructure is already there.” Read more: http://www.brownsvilleherald.com/articles/month-143191-utb-brownsville.html

Ask Dallas City Council member Tennell Atkins about his vision for the area surrounding the University of North Texas at Dallas, and he’ll tell you about Hillcrest Road and the strip of shopping, restaurants and student life near the SMU campus. It’s not a far-fetched vision for the city’s first four-year public university, located near Camp Wisdom Road and Interstate 20 in southern Dallas. The 265-acre campus is surrounded by 3,500 acres of commercially desirable land, one of the last remaining major concentrations of vacant parcels in Dallas. That’s why it is a centerpiece of Mayor Mike Rawlings’ GrowSouth initiative to improve the quality of life and the tax base in the southern half of the city. Given the right impetus, this attractive opportunity is sure to attract residential and commercial developers. That hasn’t happened so far, largely because of the city’s snail-like pace in rezoning land and making other improvements that would ready the area for growth. For the most part, City Hall insists on waiting for developers to come to it with projects instead of aggressively taking steps that would encourage development. If the city doesn’t change that approach, progress in the UNT-Dallas area will continue to be tortuously slow.
