For 2016, the budget sets aside $70 million in tuition revenue bonds from the state legislature to begin building a new College of Visual Arts and Design Building and $8 million for continuing student Union construction. A total $15.5 million in revenue financing system bonds was budgeted for Science Research Building renovations. The Coliseum, which has not had major renovations since it was built in 1973, will receive $5.5 million for renovations. Fouts Field, which was partially demolished 3 years ago, will be completely demolished and replaced with a track and field facility. Another $2 million will be spent bringing Wooten Hall up to fire code after an evaluation found multiple violations last spring. McConnell Hall, which houses the TAMS program, will also be brought up to fire code. The second floor of Sycamore Hall, which has been vacant since 2014, will be renovated, along with the first and second floors of Bruce Hall. The budget sets aside an additional $3 million for construction of the former Sack ‘n’ Save, but there are not yet plans in place to develop the area. The South side of Parking Lot 40 near Fraternity Row will be demolished, making room for more residence halls. Parking and transportation improvements coming from a $1.3 million in the budget are not specified. The UNT Health Science Center is expected to earn $308.2 million in revenue in 2016 and budgeted for $283.2 million in expenditures. If approved, construction on a new Interdisciplinary Research Building, which will house laboratories, a vivarium, teaching labs, study areas, seminar rooms and more classrooms, will begin in September. UNT Dallas will receive $1.6 million toward infrastructure renovations, including water, gas, electric and telecommunications services. We mentioned a while back that the UNT board of regents would hear a series of proposals that could have a dramatic impact on the future of the school’s athletics program. Those meetings are taking place as we speak. It really feels good to see our University step up and make this type of commitment on Coach Mac. It shows me that they are serious about competing at the highest level. It's exciting to think that we will have the majority of this staff in place for a good while with both Skaldany and Chico getting extensions. And shout out to our students and the fans as well. The turnout and success in Dallas at the Heart of Dallas Bowl had an impact on this deal getting done. It's exciting to think about the future of our football program with the pieces we now have in place. GMG!

DALLAS Room and meal plan rates are set to rise in the fall at the University of North Texas, the first of four years of rate increases approved Thursday by the UNT system Board of Regents. Standard room rates will increase 8 percent next fall and premium room rates will increase by 2 percent. Five-day meal plans will increase 5.2 percent and seven-day plans will increase 2.1 percent under the rates approved by the regents. The regents met Thursday in Dallas but there was no public discussion of the budget shortfalls and ongoing audit at UNT that were unveiled Wednesday by Chancellor Lee Jackson. The board met behind closed doors for a lengthy executive session that spanned three hours but no action was taken when they emerged. The UNT regents finance committee approved a budget today that will be another step toward the school adding a baseball program. The University of North Texas will have a balanced budget this upcoming fiscal year, with $543 million as budgeted income, and the same amount for expenditures, according to budget documents. This is part of the $870 million total budget for the University of North Texas system, which was passed by the Board of Regents unanimously last week, with one amendment. After presentations from UNT President Lane Rawlins, the board voted 6-3 to add an amendment to the budget that supports “the commitment of the UNT President of an additional $2.8 million in revenue and expenditure for the UNT Intercollegiate Athletics program and directs the Finance Committee to meet with the President immediately.” Additionally, the amendment states that the committee should review the athletics department five-year plan and make a recommendation to the board including budget adjustments. After the amendment was added, the budget passed unanimously. Rawlins was not immediately available to comment further on the amendment and how he and the committee will proceed. This topic has come up recently so I did a little digging and was able to find some interesting information on the UNT System site. I came across this .pdf document which outlines the increase and it does specifically mention that it is for student athletics along with some other area (retention, engagement and wellness): https://untsystem.edu/regents/agendas/13-03-26/2013-19%20Approval%20of%20Increase%20to%20UNT%20Student%20Services%20Fee.pdf You can read the entire thing if you have a PDF reader but the key sentence is: "An increase of $1.31 cents per SCH (semester credit hour) from $13.10 to $14.41 would generate approximately $1,200,000 per year." This is slated to begin in the Fall semester of 2013.
