Looking at his background, it would not surprise me at all if Coach Reffett is named the recruiting coordinator at UNT. He was the recruiting coordinator at UTEP (his alma mater) from 1996 to 2001. He was an excellent recruiter at New Mexico, making inroads in Florida. New Mexico Coach Long stated: Troy has extensive recruiting ties in the state of Texas and a thorough knowledge of the area and of our culture. He's a real good fit." Todd Berry on Reffett: “The last couple of years when I have been out at UNLV there was a very unique style of defense that was at the University of New Mexico. I had to get ready for it because I was the offensive coordinator. Every time we played them it was the most difficult game to play. I looked across the field at their talent level and was thinking ‘they are not doing anything special with a bunch of special players. They are doing some special things with some pretty average players.’ That is a real mark of a great coach. It looks like he may employ a 3-3-5 scheme and likes to blitz: New defensive coordinator Troy Reffett arrived from New Mexico and immediately replaced the 4-2-5 scheme with a 3-3-5 alignment. Changes were in order after the Warhawks were gouged for 444.7 ypg (NCAA No. 109) last season. Longhorn coaches have studied ULM’s personell from last season but spent more time studying Reffett’s strategies at New Mexico. The expectation is that the Warhawks will send extra defenders on nearly every snap after Reffett’s crew blitzed 76 percent of the time in 2008. To my understanding, Reffett was the main recruiter for ULM in Texas. Many of us used to lament some of the talent that ULM was able to pull out of Texas both under Dodge and Mac. The relationships that Reffett has developed in Texas through his career could really, really benefit the program. What I like most about him is that throughout his career, he has been a guy who accomplished more with less resources. GMG.
