  2. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – You won’t find the Western Kentucky football team on Phil Steele’s list of Most Improved College Football teams for 2015, a list that includes 15 programs. Western did not qualify because the Hilltoppers closed the 2014 season by toppling unbeaten Marshall and Central Michigan. That bumped WKU to 8-5 – and the Hilltoppers were this close to beating Illinois, Middle Tennessee and UAB. Steele does not consider any team coming off a winning season eligible for his list. But consider this: What if the Hilltoppers bounce into Nashville Sept. 3 and open their season by handling Vanderbilt on the SEC Network? WKU is only a 2 ½-point underdog. WKU has started its season by defeating a Southeastern Conference program in Nashville before, right? Last season Vandy looked as if it was back to being Vandy. Then WKU returns to Bowling Green to open its home schedule against Louisiana Tech, a team that lost its defensive coordinator (Manny Diaz) and could be relying on erratic arm of Florida transfer Jeff Driskel at quarterback. Who do you like in a quarterback shootout – Driskel or Brandon Doughty of WKU? read more: http://www.wdrb.com/story/29640456/bozich-how-western-kentucky-football-can-become-the-talk-of-the-town
  3. North Texas is just two years removed from a 9-4 year that included a bowl win over UNLV. Holtz compared North Texas’ 2014 season to Tech’s 2013 campaign, Holtz’s first as coach, when the Bulldogs followed up a 9-3 record with a subpar 4-8 effort. “They kind of went through the year last year like we did two years ago with graduating everybody and having to replace so many newcomers,” Holtz said. “I’m sure they’re going to be much improved this year.” read more: http://www.thenewsstar.com/story/sports/college/louisiana-tech/2015/07/23/-parity-rule-usa-west/30572761/
  4. BOCA RATON, Fla. – Conference USA media day, the unofficial beginning of the league’s new football season, will start Wednesday morning at the Boca Raton Hotel and Resort in South Florida. Here are 10 questions to ponder about the league with the start of the 2015 season a little more than one month away. Who will win MTSU’s quarterback battle? It’s the most pressing question facing the Blue Raiders with fall camp set to start Aug. 6, and all indications through spring practice and summer workouts are that a decision is still a ways off. Incumbent starter Austin Grammer was great the first half of 2014 before faltering down the stretch, while redshirt freshman Brent Stockstill has continued to press his junior counterpart each step of the way. Given that both players are similar, it’s likely MTSU’s season actually may not hinge on the decision one way or the other, but it’s hard to envision both playing all year long. Will WKU live up to the hype? Conference USA media members, college football experts and preseason magazines across the country have pegged Western Kentucky as the team to beat in C-USA in 2015. The Hilltoppers return 16 starters from a team that won its final five games of 2014, including the Football Bowl Subdivision’s leading passer in quarterback Brandon Doughty. Their offense will be good, but will the Tops’ subpar defense make the necessary improvements in order for WKU to unseat Marshall and claim the East Division? Can Louisiana Tech repeat in the West?
