  3. Remember Brock Berglund, the standout quarterback from Valor Christian? Well, Berglund may also be a Bear after originally committing to the University of Colorado, transferring to the University of Kansas and eventually landing at North Texas. Do the math, and Berglund has two years of eligibility but this would also be his fourth school in three years — those situations don’t usually work out. Realize, verbal commitments are just that — verbal. A student-athlete can change his mind between now and next month, and in a lot of cases, they do. Most figure they’re NCAA Division I-A material and have to be told so by such schools. However, the offers haven’t come because those schools have the player further down on their recruiting list and are awaiting commitments from the no-brainer recruits. Stay tuned. 4. 6-4 290 lineman from Berglund's high school. http://hscolorado.scout.com/a.z?s=385&p=8&c=1&nid=7113995 "Along with the offers Cummings is gaining interest from North Texas, San Diego State, Montana, UNLV, Northern Colorado, Colorado, Colorado State, Lafayette, ..."
  5. A few months ago, Saturday’s game between UNT and Louisiana Tech looked like it would be a referendum on whether or not Dan McCarney and Mike Canales went after the right transfer quarterback. UNT took Kansas transfer Brock Berglund after talking with former Ryan and Texas Tech quarterback Scotty Young, who ended up at Louisiana Tech. Now it looks like neither will see the field in a significant capacity. Berglund never made it off the bench when Derek Thompson improved during the off-season and held down the starting job for the third straight year. Young began the season as Tech’s starter, but has since been surpassed by redshirt freshman Ryan Higgins. Higgins led Tech to a win over UTEP last week and has thrown for who has thrown for 776 yards on the year. 6. For the last two seasons, the man handed the responsibility of carrying the Mean Green offense has been senior quarterback Derek Thompson. That could no longer be the case, as head coach Dan McCarney opened competition at the position this offseason, giving the four eligible quarterbacks on the depth chart the opportunity to compete to start week one when the University of Idaho comes to town. “Even though we started preparing for Idaho earlier this week, we still take about three fourths of the practice to compete and evaluate the position,” McCarney said. “It’s fun to see because there really is some real competition going on right now and these guys all want to be the one to lead the team.” Derek Thompson Thompson has the experience in starting and the strongest chemistry with his receivers because of his starting role the last two years with the team. In his two years as a starter, Thompson has accumulated 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with a completion percentage of more than 57 percent. He produced just 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last year. McCarney said Thompson has been taking snaps solely with the first string offense. “As far as the quarterback position goes this is the most depth we have ever had here,” Thompson said. “Any competition is good competition and we push each other and coach each other.” Read more: http://ntdaily.com/quarterback-unt-football-team-undecided/
  7. I just don't get it. Berglund is a great athlete with a quick release, gun arm and wheels. He's absolutely picture perfect for what Mac and Chico wants. I understand he lost reps in the spring. But not a mention of him this Fall....? From everything I've read he seems like a very good kid, respectful to his coaches and teammates...hard worker...motivated... In the spring game he got limited reps but showed remarkable speed and arm strength... And yet from Vito's latest report he is running third team and splitting time with a true freshman? Perhaps he is not a great practice player and fares better in the games? I just am trying to comprehend why this guy isn't moving up the depth chart faster especially when the more senior guys have struggled. This is one of the bigger head scratcher personnel things I can remember since following this program...

  9. Dan McCarney got a long look at all three quarterbacks who are in the race to start in North Texas season opener against Idaho during the Mean Greens first full scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday. What UNTs head coach saw convinced him that he hasnt seen enough yet to declare a winner. Returning starter Derek Thompson, backup Andrew McNulty and Brock Berglund, a transfer from Kansas in his first season at UNT, all saw time with UNTs first-team offense during the workout that lasted 136 plays. The Mean Green struggled to get anything going offensively with any of those quarterbacks and will head into the second week of fall camp without a clear pecking order among them as time creeps toward the Aug. 31 opener. We are inconsistent, McCarney said. Nobody is bad, but no one is playing to the level that we need them to right now. Its not any one guy. All of them need to elevate their performance and be more consistent. We are going to grade all these snaps and see where the depth chart falls heading into the second week of camp. Thompson has started each of the last two seasons and received the most time with the first-team offense among the three players competing for the starting job. Thompson has thrown for 4,551 yards in his college career and has a huge advantage over the rest of UNTs quarterbacks in terms of experience. 10. Over the years, there have been a series of key players who have either come pretty much out of nowhere or seen their roles expand unexpectedly and really help UNT. Jeremy Brown was a former walk-on, so was Ivan Delgado. Both ended up playing key roles for UNT. A few years ago, Casey Fitzgerald came out of nowhere to have a really good career at UNT. Scholarship players are a different story when it comes to unexpected contributions, but I dont think anyone expected Zac Whitfield to win a starting job and then play pretty well after making the move from running back to cornerback. Carlos Harris contributed after being thrust into the lineup after Brelan Chancellor broke his collarbone. And that brings us to this season, and the key question Does another difference-maker emerge? 11. With the conclusion of another spring football season after last Saturday’s Green-White scrimmage, the next significant date for football is the season home opener against the University of Idaho on August 31 – the first home opener for UNT since 2001. Although the coaching staff will have many decisions to make about the starting lineups and depth chart, the spring season helped give an idea of what the team might look like on that opening Saturday in the fall. Some Mean Green athletes helped their stock, while others will have some more work to do if they want to start at the beginning of the season. Winner – Senior quarterback Derek Thompson Thompson looks to go out with a blaze of glory as he heads into his senior season. As last year’s starting quarterback, he played with the first team most of the spring and was successful, showing the chemistry with his receivers that is expected out of a veteran redshirt senior. However, Thompson must continue to show he’s calm and reliable in the backfield, no matter how many 300 pound behemoths rush at him. Loser – Sophomore quarterback Brock Berglund Read more: http://wordpress1.cws.unt.edu/?p=4066
  12. We seem to have been transported back to the days of winter ball (Darrell Dickey used to have spring practice in February, hence the term Winter Ball, back in the day). But as always, there were a few interesting tidbits to go along with some frozen toes today. UNT’s defense pretty much dominated a scrimmage at the end of practice until UNT went into red zone and hurry-up drills. Derek Thompson hit Darnell Smith for touchdown passes that covered 15 and 19 yards, threw another 3-yard touchdown pass and ran another in from 3 yards out. Thompson knocked Marcus Trice out in the process on the run. Trice was down for a few minutes before getting up. Thompson also threw what should have been an interception. Zac Whitfield just flat dropped one. Whitfield is a good corner. UNT has to sit there and wonder just how much better he would be if he could catch the ball more consistently. 13. Mean Green football started spring training Wednesday and one of the biggest questions for the upcoming season is who will be the starting quarterback. Last season, UNT averaged 219 yards a game No. 74 in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Mean Green offense was run by then-redshirt junior quarterback Derek Thompson who threw 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for 2,649 yards. Thompson returns for his final season, but Kansas University sophomore transfer Brock Berglund and sophomore Andrew McNulty are both gunning for the starting position. Berglund has played limited college football, but is the highest-rated high school prospect for the Mean Green. He transferred last year, but wasnt eligible to play. McCarney and offensive coordinator Mike Canalas both said his work with the practice squad made the defense work. McNulty is returning from a broken hand and, like Berglund, adds a running threat. Head coach Dan McCarney said every position is open for the taking. He said there is no distinction between walk-ons and scholarship players in the spring because it is just open season. 15. Arguably the top 2 headline names from this "low-ranked" class were Brock Berglund and Dajon Williams. Two facts you hear a lot are that we haven't had an all-conference quarterback since Scott Hall's last season in 2004, and that we haven't had a winning season since 2004. This is not a coincidence and you shouldn't fool yourself to think it is. Quarterback has one of the strongest correlations, there are still exceptions, to team success out of any position in any team sport. I know this might be beating a dead horse, but our quarterback play must improve and can make a huge difference. Whether it's DT or Berglund this year, the success of this team will ride largely on the success of our quarterback play. Looking farther down the road, even if DT comes out and has a good senior year, Coach Mac's job security will be greatly tied to the play of Brock Berglund and Dajon Williams. Finally, I want to ask you guys a question. What do you think about us starting the season with a two-quarterback rotation between DT and Berglund? Mccarney seemed open to the idea in his presser. I would rather not, but like he said, whatever gives us a better chance to win.
  16. National signing day, one of the milestones on the college football calendar, has arrived. The top high school players in the country will sit down and sign national letters of intent today, restocking programs with newcomers in the universities hope they will lead them to success. In a lot of ways, North Texas will be no different. There are a host of high school players across the state who are set to sign with the Mean Green. What could be even more important both to the short- and long-term prospects of the program is how UNTs plunge into the secondary market for talent turns out. Quarterback Brock Berglund (Kansas), wide receiver Darius Terrell (Texas) and running back Reggie Pegram (Purdue) will receive a second chance to tap into their potential after transferring to UNT, while Snow College offensive lineman Justin Manu and Eastern Arizona defensive end Quenton Brown are among four junior college players expected to join the Mean Greens 2013 class. Those transfers wont be on UNTs roster for four or five years like a lot of the high school players who will sign letters of intent today. What they offer is a quick fix and a big risk for UNT. If they pan out, UNTs secondary-market players could help the Mean Green snap a string of eight consecutive losing seasons during their short stays at the school. 18. Long was also technically Kansas' man on Wichita, Kansas native Joseph Randle, but Randle committed to Oklahoma State two months before Long got to Kansas. Randle was considered one of the nation's top 25 running backs or top 45 athletes, depending on how the various services categorized him. Among the '11 class signees, Long's best pickup was Brock Berglund, a Highlands Ranch, Colorado native who was considered one of the nation's top 30 quarterbacks. He originally committed to Colorado, but Long swayed him to Kansas. Berglund also had offers from Boise State, Kansas State, UCLA, Washington, Utah, Minnesota and others. He has since transferred from Kansas to North Texas. 19. Unfortunately I missed the game today due to my club baseball games, so I was relegated to tracking it on my phone. I saw DT was having a bad game at least statistically so I wanted to see what the reactions would be like on here. I'll be honest, I am not a fan of DT's quarterback play at all but I was a little surprised to see how harsh people were on here. That being said, as someone who has been heavily in favor of starting Berglund over DT next year, I wanted to point out that DT had a bad day throwing so he could minimally impact the game in a positive way for us. Even if Berglund starts and plays great for us he is going to be off every now and then, even if just for a half. That's just part of football. The thing is, as a true dual threat qb he can make plays with his legs any game and still make plays for us if he is off passing. You can be off throwing but unless you're injured you don't really have an off day athletically. Just some food for thought. Hope he can pick it up for the rest of the year and at least complete the short passes.

  21. DENTON -- Brock Berglund, a former Colorado high school quarterback who began his career at Kansas, has left Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College and enrolled at North Texas. “I am excited to be a part of The University of North Texas football team,” Berglund posted on his Twitter account Thursday evening. “This is a special place, and I am very excited for what the future holds. Many people have supported me, allowing me to live out my dreams. I can't say how grateful I am.” A source within the UNT athletic department confirmed that Berglund has enrolled at the school. Berglund, a former Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) standout was among the top rated dual-threat quarterbacks in the Class of 2011. He visited UNT during spring practice earlier this year. Berglund visited several schools in addition to UNT. Those schools studied Berglund’s transcript and discovered that he does not have the credit hours necessary to transfer and play at another school at the Football Bowl Subdivision level or receive financial aid in 2012.
