Several statues at the University of North Texas greeted students with new, colorful and fashionable looks Monday, which marked the first day of classes for the semester. Owls, turtles, deer, rabbits and more donned sweaters and scarves. The university took to its Facebook page Monday to applaud the project, writing, "SWEATER BOMBED: Last night, UNT's statues were mysteriously decked out with nice knits. To the anonymous dresser, thank you for keeping our permanent residents warm and colorful! UNT student Wesley Kirk took the wonderful photos." Former Iowa State football coach Dan McCarney led North Texas to its first bowl win in more than a decade (beating UNLV 36-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl). And according to ESPN blogger Richard Durrett, fans weren’t quite sure how to react. “Some of them contemplated rushing the field and in the end, maybe 500 of them decided to join the team in celebration at the 50-yard line, doing so in the most calm and orderly "storming" of a field you'll ever see.” Read more: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20140106/SPORTS/301060083/0/NEWS01/?odyssey=nav|head

UNT is expecting this semester’s freshman class to be the largest in university history, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Troy Johnson said. Preliminary headcount numbers won’t be released until the 12th class day of the semester, but Johnson estimated that the freshman class had grown by about 10 percent. The expected addition of 380 new students brings the freshman class to about 4,000 students. “I believe our academic programs, campus environment and affordable tuition play a vital role for this record-breaking class,” he said. “UNT has spent multiple years of efforts on targeting admission and financial aid to attract more students.” Although total enrollment at UNT has been down, Johnson said the number of freshmen enrolling at the university has been on the rise since last year. According to the online UNT Fact Book, last year’s freshman class of 3,600 students was the largest freshman class since 2005. read more: http://www.ntdaily.com/?p=68168
