OK -- hard not to like this kid when you watch him on film! Love his nose for the ball.

Sergio Medina heard a friend was headed to a football camp this summer and decided to tag along. That simple decision turned out to be one that changed the course of the Boutte (La.) Hahnville linebacker’s life. Medina didn’t know a lot about North Texas back then but liked what he saw during that one-day camp. The same was true of UNT’s coaching staff, which began recruiting Medina and invited him back for an official visit last weekend. Medina committed on the spot and was one of two players UNT picked up commitments from in the past few days. Trinity Valley Community College offensive lineman Shawn McKinney also committed on his visit. Oral commitments are non-binding. The mid-term signing period for junior college players begins Dec. 19, when McKinney plans to sign with UNT. National signing day for players in the class of 2013 is Feb. 6. “Everyone made me feel at home and the coaches are all really nice,” Medina said. “They want to win. [uNT head coach Dan] McCarney wants to turn the program around. I want to be a part of that.” UNT was the first program to offer Medina (6-foot, 210 pounds) a scholarship, but Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana were all showing interest. Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20121210-football-unt-lands-2-more-recruits.ece

Hahnville High School running back Sergio Medina told his coaches last week that he has verbally committed to attend college and play football at North Texas. "Sergio is an excellent football player and had options from a college standpoint, but North Texas has recruited him very hard since the summer months," Lambert said. "He is a very instinctive football player, rarely out of position, and North Texas plans on playing him at strong safety. In many ways, his high school and then the transition to college on defense is similar to that of Jerico Nelson when he came out of Destrehan High School." After the Hahnville Tigers started off their football season 0-4, head coach Lou Valdin said he had never had a worse start in his 33 years as a coach. Then he switched senior Sergio Medina from middle linebacker to running back and the team won their next six games in a row, going undefeated in district play and making it to the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs. For his performance, Medina won the All-District Offensive Most Valuable Player award. "There's no question that the move we made with Sergio is the move that won the district for us," Valdin said. "A guy that rushed for 1,000 yards and 15 touchdowns in seven games is pretty special. Statistics wise he is as good as any we've ever had here." Medina's best performance on the year was against Destrehan, when he rushed for 240 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-44 overtime win. Read more: http://www.heraldguide.com/details.php?id=11772
