A few months ago, Saturday’s game between UNT and Louisiana Tech looked like it would be a referendum on whether or not Dan McCarney and Mike Canales went after the right transfer quarterback. UNT took Kansas transfer Brock Berglund after talking with former Ryan and Texas Tech quarterback Scotty Young, who ended up at Louisiana Tech. Now it looks like neither will see the field in a significant capacity. Berglund never made it off the bench when Derek Thompson improved during the off-season and held down the starting job for the third straight year. Young began the season as Tech’s starter, but has since been surpassed by redshirt freshman Ryan Higgins. Higgins led Tech to a win over UTEP last week and has thrown for who has thrown for 776 yards on the year. Just for those wondering about a future CUSA foe...La Tech was blasted by NC State in young Mr. Holtz debut 40-14. Tough day in front of 54,000+ fans in NC. Scotty Young went 15 of 27 for 178 yards with 0 INT's. He had 3 rushes for a net of 7 yards. Took 2 sacks. Long pass was 40 yards...no passing TD's on the night for Mr. Young and La Tech. Tough way to start...been there...don't like it one bit. I expect both Holtz and Young to rebound after this initial pounding. Looking forward to building a rivalry with LaTech.

Finally, after three years, Scotty Young will have his chance to be a starting quarterback at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. After sitting out last season at Louisiana Tech after transferring from Texas Tech after two unproductive seasons on the bench, Young was named La. Tech’s starting quarterback when the team’s post-spring depth chart was released on Thursday. Young, as you’ll recall, is known for his prolific arm and probably should be equally as known for his hair (quality lettuce can be seen here.) Young, as you’ll also recall, was a PARADE All-America selection and the Associated Press Texas Player of the Year. He finally got his shot to live up to the hype that preceded him when he arrived at Texas Tech. This spring, Young didn’t disappoint. In the Bulldogs’ spring game, Young completed 15 of 20 passes for 161 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. His back-up, Ryan Higgins, completed 17-of-26 passes for zero touchdowns and three interceptions. New La. Tech head coach Skip Holtz had some positive things to say about Young’s performance on the school’s athletic website.
