Cash's on-the-money deliveries paying dividends
Coach Andy Mac posted a topic in Mean Green Football
One can never tell what the future holds but sometimes your destiny writes itself for you. And with a name like Cash Davis McCollum how could you not expect a 6-foot, 4-inch, 210-pound quarterback with a slingshot for an arm. “You know the movie ‘Bull Durham’,” explained Michael McCollum, Cash’s father and an assistant football coach at China Spring High School. “The guy’s name is Crash Davis and I wanted to name him Crash Davis, but my wife said ‘No, we can’t name him Crash.” So I said, ‘How about we take the ‘R’ out. Let’s call him Cash Davis.’” Unlike the cocky, jaded veteran catcher played by Kevin Costner, Cash’s confidence is subtle — collected. He’s cool under pressure. Alec Morris, who transferred to North Texas in January, has done “really well” this offseason, Mean Green offensive coordinator Graham Harrell told AL.com. “Early on, he was playing better than anyone else was, and we just had to advance someone as quickly as possible, and we tried to do that with him,” said Harrell, who is also the quarterback coach. “That’s kind of where he sits. We expect him to have a good fall camp. And if he does, then I’d expect he could be the starter easily around here.” Morris, who was at Alabama from 2012-15 but attempted just one pass, received the bulk of the reps as North Texas’ first-team quarterback during spring practice. His competition at the position includes junior Quinn Shanbour, sophomore Connor Means and redshirt freshman Caleb Chumley. Morris, who is eligible to play immediately this season as a graduate transfer, opted to transfer in hopes of landing a starting job. “It was definitely a difficult decision to leave Alabama. No doubt,” said Morris, who is from Allen, Texas, which is about 40 miles from UNT’s campus in Denton. “One thing that made it easier was that I had been around Alabama quite a long time. I had seen a lot of my really close friends graduate and leave, so the amount of relationships I had as far as truly close friends just being around, a fifth-year senior, guys graduate and they move on.” Read more: http://gridironnow.com/former-alabama-qb-alec-morris-north-texas/

I know we have a ton of QB attention recently and we don't want to go all A&M by getting too many bodies for one position BUT it is our biggest need coming out of the last two years. This guy may not be someone we want to represent UNT but it probably would be worth a telephone call to see if he would be interested in Denton and bring him in as a preferred walk-on at the least. Here are the highlights from the ESPN story: "The Missouri Tigers on Thursday dismissed junior quarterback Maty Mauk from the football team for "violating team rules," new coach Barry Odom announced. Odom said Thursday he met with Mauk in December and gave him a fresh start, but Missouri suspended Mauk again this week after a brief video was posted on social media. It shows a person believed to be Mauk appearing to snort a white, powderlike substance, and an accompanying tweet mentioned Mauk by name, but there was no confirmation from Missouri that the video was of him. Mauk has a 17-5 record as Missouri's starter. In the four games he played last season, Mauk guided the Tigers to a 3-1 record and passed for 654 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions." http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/14666830/missouri-tigers-dismiss-quarterback-maty-mauk-investigating-video

There might not have been a more important challenge for UNT heading into the offseason than finding a solution to its quarterback problem. UNT used three this season — Josh Greer, Dajon Williams and Andrew McNulty — has another one waiting in the wings the coaching staff likes in redshirt freshman Connor Means and a grayshirt coming in with Caleb Chumley. UNT still went out and searched the country for a junior college addition. That pretty much said it all in terms of where UNT stands. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/12/has-unt-found-its-quarterback.html/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DaMarcus Smith spent a whole lot of time at a whole lot of places over the last few years trying to find the right spot to continue his football career at the major college level. The highly regarded quarterback believes that search came to an end late Sunday night, when he committed to North Texas. Smith spent last season at Butler (Kansas) Community College, the fourth school he either committed to, signed with or played for since he developed into one of the top quarterback prospects in the country in 2011 in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. “This is the right spot for me,” Smith said of UNT. “I like the offense that they run and felt comfortable with the staff. They said that they are wanting me to come in and compete for the starting spot.” Smith (6-2, 210) was one of five junior college players to commit to UNT over the last few days. The Mean Green landed a commitment from Butler offensive lineman Brian Ochs on Friday. I am a Dajon guy. But after seeing his Twitter comments, I'm wondering if he's got the right mentality to lead a FBS program. He's always had question marks about his attitude and his twitter comments will cement what many think - and certainly can't please Mac. What are your thoughts?

From Navarro College article: "Four games into the season, Greer was right on target and garnering notice across the country. He was completing 64 percent of his passes and had only a single interception in 95 attempts while tossing seven touchdowns. And then on the next-to-last series against Kilgore in Week 4, Greer was hit from behind and fell on his right side, breaking his collarbone and landing him on the sidelines for the next six weeks..." He ended up throwing for 1,205 yards and eight touchdowns in only six games last season. http://www.navarrocollege.edu/athletics ... ng-finish/

Mac said we could see a early rotation under center. Everybody should have a better idea after 4 games. I think Mac & Chico will eventually go with just 1 guy. Conference USA starts Oct 12th vs MTSU

I watch twitter and saw Travis Garrett...an athlete written about in the DMN as an outstanding athlete post about talking to Coach Poore(from Minnesota Gophers). I just think he is an example of a kid we need to recruit hard because he is from the area and UNT can build a strong relationship with him. I don't think UNT has reached out to him but I could be wrong. We have a new stadium and new selling/recruiting tools to utilize....lets go build a dynasty. Put the pieces of the game into play early. Sorry about the post when I copied and pasted I didn't realize how it pasted on here. Hope this clears it up. Got to run but will talk later tonight. Crazy schedulae right now.
