  1. With less than two weeks before the start of the 2021 college football season for Maryland football, coach Mike Locksley made an addition to the team's coaching staff. The Terrapins brought in former UTEP offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Mike Canales to serve as an analyst. He has also spent time as the offensive coordinator at North Texas, USF and Arizona. Canales confirmed the hire by updating his Twitter biography. He has experience as a head coach during interim stints in 2010 and 2015 with North Texas where he was credited with starting the popular "Lock the gate" chant. In those two seasons, Canales posted a record of 3-9. read more: https://www.si.com/college/indiana/football/big-ten-daily-indiana-august-27-purdue-jeff-brohm-jack-plummer-shemar-stewart-ohio-state-mike-canales-maryland
  2. Bouncing around the standings for the majority of his tenure since being granted the head coaching job at North Texas, Dan McCarney desperately sought an uprising as 2015 unfolded. What the Mean Green collided with to kick off the season was a 0-5 record, alongside constant trouncing and minimal competitiveness. North Texas would drop all five matchups by double digits, and a 61-point drubbing to the hands of Portland State would trigger a sense of renovating as McCarney was immediately handed a pink slip to depart. The Mean Green would ultimately trudge forward to a 1-11 record but appeared slightly stabilized under interim head coach Mike Canales. Compiling a dismal 1-6 clip under the substitute, North Texas rarely matured, yet it did hit the 17-point mark three times. Only once did it reach that mark with McCarney handling duties. Canales was set to cut ties from all North Texas facets by athletic director Rick Villarreal once the season concluded. Whether Canales was serving as a plug to halt the bleeding of the team or a potential candidate to pioneer the program in the future, it’s rather difficult to spark a 0-5 club that just watched its head coach saunter through the doors. Plus, Canales succeeded in one area that McCarney did not: win a football game. 3. Tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Mark Elder has been hired as the new head coach at Eastern Kentucky, the Football Championship Subdivision program announced early Tuesday afternoon. Lexington-based television station WTVQ reported late Monday night that Elder would be hired. "I'm excited, blessed and honored for the opportunity to lead one of the most tradition-rich programs in college football," Elder said in Eastern Kentucky's release announcing his hire. Since Tennessee splits up its special teams responsibilities among its coaching staff, Jones has some flexibility with this hire, though he will want to ensure there's no drop-off on special teams or in recruiting. Offensive coordinator Mike DeBord has a background coaching tight ends, so Tennessee could elect to hire a full-time quarterbacks coach and have DeBord oversee the tight ends. Graduate assistant Nick Sheridan is highly regarded by DeBord and Jones and could be promoted, but he may in play to join Elder at Eastern Kentucky. Jones also could bring in another coach to whom he has ties. One possibility could be Mike Canales, most recently the interim coach at North Texas. Canales has a background as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and spent a couple of years in the NFL before coaching at Arizona, South Florida and North Texas. read more: http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/sports/college/story/2015/dec/08/tennessee-assistant-mark-elder-reportedly-hired-eastern-kentucky/339465/
  4. As a UNT alum, I would like to personally thank you for leading us to our first victory against UTKFC tonight. This has been a tough season, but you came in and did a very good job turning this program around the last couple of weeks. Thank you for understanding this is an important game for the program. Thank you for your hard work on behalf of the program and Go Mean Green!
  5. Newly appointed interim head coach Mike Canales addressed the media as head coach for the first time on Monday morning, just 36 hours removed from a crushing 66-7 loss to Portland State University that resulted in former head coach Dan McCarney being relieved of his duties. Canales discussed several issues throughout his nearly 30-minute press conference, beginning with the current state of North Texas football. “It’s unfortunate that we are in this situation, without question,” Canales said. “But it is what it is. I am confident our kids and our coaching staff will respond and battle through it.” This will be Canales’ second time as interim head coach of the Mean Green, his first stint coming in the middle of the 2010 season when athletic director Rick Villarreal fired then head coach Todd Dodge after a 1-6 start. “What’s different now? Well, back then we were 1-6. We had won a game. Right now we’re 0-5,” Canales said. “What’s the difference? One of my best friends is no longer the head coach.” read more: http://ntdaily.com/interim-football-head-coach-mike-canales-meets-the-media/

  9. Sam Houston State announced its list of five finalists for its next football coach, including Northwest Missouri State athletic director Mel Tjeerdsma. The longtime Bearcats football coach acknowledged Saturday he would interview Tuesday for the position vacated by former Central Missouri coach Willie Fritz, who left to become coach at Georgia Southern after four years at the Texas school. On Sunday, the school announced the other candidates, which include former Delaware coach K.C. Keeler, Virginia offensive line coach Scott Wachenheim, former Texas offensive coordinator Darrell Wyatt and North Texas offensive coordinator Michael Canales. “Each of these candidates meet the criteria we set out when we started our search,” Sam Houston State athletic director Bobby Williams told the Hunstville Item. “The quality of interest for our head coaching position has been impressive. We have talked to more than 50 individuals in some form or fashion, an amazing amount given the short period of time.” Read more: http://www.newspressnow.com/sports/college/northwest_missouri_state_bearcats/article_907124e4-eaa1-5998-ab49-1246a414038b.html
  10. One of the great aspects of college football is that it gives guys opportunities they might have had otherwise in life. As far as the game goes, I had a chance to take a closer look at the matchup last night while working on my gameday page, one of the big projects of the week. This game really could come down to whether or not UNT can slow down Ohios offense. Tyler Tettleton is a really, really good college quarterback and Beau Blakenship can pound the ball with the best of them. UNT is not particularly big up front defensively. 12. Quenton Brown believed he would receive a second chance to play at the Football Bowl Subdivision level after leaving Central Florida. A solid season at Eastern Arizona College and an old relationship with John Skladany helped ensure Brown would get that chance at North Texas. Brown said he committed to play for the Mean Green on Monday and signed his national letter of intent early Wednesday, the first day of the mid-term signing period. The 6-foot-4-inch, 225-pound Georgia native will enroll at UNT for the spring semester and have two years of eligibility remaining. Skladany was the defensive coordinator at UCF when Brown was there, before taking over in the same capacity at UNT. The environment, the conference and the coaching staff were all part of my decision, Brown said of his reasons for picking UNT, which will play its first season in Conference USA in 2013. I know coach Skladany, and [uNT offensive coordinator Mike] Canales recruited me.
