The University of Memphis looks as if it has found a replacement for departed cornerback coach Chris Vaughn, who left to join Charlie Strong’s staff at the University of Texas.
North Texas cornerbacks coach Ryan Walters, a former Colorado defensive back, is expected to fill the void, according to several sources close to the program.
Walters spent one season under Dan McCarney at North Texas in 2013 after serving as a graduate assistant in 2012 at Oklahoma and working with the Sooner cornerbacks. Before joining the Oklahoma staff, Walters spent two seasons at Arizona under Mike Stoops. He was a graduate assistant in 2010 and the defensive backs coach in 2011.
After finishing his playing career in 2008 as an honorable mention All-Big 12 defensive back, Walters served as a student assistant for the Buffaloes in 2009 working with the secondary.
Memphis, 3-9 last season, begins spring practice March 2 and its third season under coach Justin Fuente next fall.
