Who will be the starting safeties for the Chicago Bears?
Harry posted a topic in Mean Green Football
Undrafted free agent Marcus Trice is an intriguing prospect. He's short (5'8") and stocky (193 pounds), but had a nose for the ball at North Texas. College Football Reference had him down for 5 interceptions, 9 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, 4.5 tackles for loss including a sack and 91 total tackles. The Bears list him at defensive back, so he may project to nickleback as well. Read more: http://www.windycitygridiron.com/2014/7/31/5955031/chicago-bears-2014-position-battles-safety -
Marcus Trice – S Why would a rookie tryout player draw much attention? They normally shouldn’t because they are typically no more than extra bodies for training camp. In the case of safety Marcus Trice though, it could be a different story. Coming out of North Texas, he is small in every well from his school down to his 5’8″ frame. At the same time he clearly had talent because he was originally recruited at Oklahoma. Further view of the game tape shows a player with athleticism and speed who always seems to be around the football and also plays his best games against the best competition. He blocked a punt against 9th ranked Georgia, had two interceptions against Rice who went 10-3 and won the Conference USA championship and collected 14 tackles and a pick against 7-5 Ohio. The kid knows how to make plays. Initially it will be his special teams value that gets him on the roster, but there might be more there worth exploring. Follow-up draft thoughts (Mac on drought, Trice to camp)
Harry posted a topic in Mean Green Football
UNT safety Marcus Trice will be headed to a rookie mini camp with the Chicago Bears in the next few days, bringing the number of newly-minted Mean Green graduates who will get a shot in the NFL to three. Brelan Chancellor signed a rookie free agent contract with the Chargers, while Zach Orr will go to camp with the Ravens. Here’s today’s story. The reaction to UNT not having a player picked has been pretty strong. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/05/follow-up-draft-thoughts-mac-on-drought-trice-to-camp.html/ -

UNT fans will be talking about the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl for years. The win — and the Mean Green’s breakout season in general — changed the course of the program. We will share our thoughts on how over the next few weeks/months. Before we do, we ought to stop to consider the legacy of UNT’s senior class. We wrote about it quite a bit in the days leading up to the Heart of Dallas Bowl and in the wake of UNT’s win in the paper. What we haven’t done is talk about it much on the blog — a place where we can be a little more opinionated. Marcus Trice started under the overhang in the end zone and jogged slowly onto the green turf at Apogee Stadium, just like the rest of his senior teammates. Most met their mothers and fathers on senior day at North Texas, while others were welcomed by girlfriends or grandparents Trice ran into the arms of what looked like a family reunion before the Mean Greens home finale against Texas-San Antonio on Nov. 23. Ann and Pierre Givens, his aunt and uncle, were there, as were Ed and Tina Taylor, family friends who served as his legal guardians since 2008, and their son Darius Taylor, a friend who is more like a brother. Trice often has wondered how his life might have turned out had it not been for each member of the group that helped guide him from St. Louis to Mesquite, through a two-year stint playing for Oklahoma and finally to UNT. Trice grew up in the rough sections of the north side of St. Louis and the suburb of Pagedale. Three cousins and a close friend were shot and killed and another died of a drug overdose in those neighborhoods over the last six years. Trices mother, Charissie Evans, thought he was on his way to a similar fate and convinced him to start over in Mesquite a new town with new people to guide him. That decision changed Trices life. We are closing in on the beginning of two-a-days pretty quickly, and as the days run down, I will be continuing a series of blog posts on key players for UNT this season. There are some that come to mind right off the bat — Derek Thompson was the first name on the list. Others are a little easier to overlook. Marcus Trice is one of those players. There was a lot of excitement when he transferred to UNT from Oklahoma, but months have gone by since. He sat out last year as a transfer and practiced with the team. He had better be ready to go because he is going to have to be a key piece of UNT’s secondary that will be largely new heading into the 2012 season. UNT’s defensive backs were something of a punching bag last year, and at times those guys deserved to take some of the blame in a couple of losses. The idea that UNT’s secondary was terrible a year ago was a little overplayed, though, in my opinion. UNT ranked third in Sun Belt Conference play with an average of 215.0 passing yards allowed a game. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2012/07/key-players-for-2012-part-1-marcus-trice.html/
