Denison Pastor James R. Thorne said he still visits Cleburne often despite memories of racism and prejudice in the late 1960s.
“I’m coming back to focus on Jesus Christ and salvation,” Thorne said.
Thorne moved on to North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas, where he moved from wide receiver to running back for five games. Thorne then repeated history, becoming that school’s first black quarterback.
“Those were hard times, too,” Thorne said. “It was basically flashbacks to Cleburne all over again. But you know, we’ve had a lot of good guys come through and play after my time [at CHS and UNT] and so I guess I look at it like that. But, at the time, it was a learning experience. That’s for sure.”
