BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head football coach Kevin Wilson completed his coaching staff today with the announcement of Noah Joseph as safeties coach. Joseph spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons in the same position and as recruiting coordinator at the University of North Texas. “Noah is a dynamic, energetic coach who is a great fit in our secondary and a very good recruiter,” Wilson said. “He has an impressive pedigree, tremendous enthusiasm and has experienced success at every stop in his career. We took our time with this hire and decided another coach in the secondary was best for our defense. Coach Knorr and I both felt very comfortable with Noah and we are excited to welcome him and his family to IU.” “I am excited for this opportunity,” Joseph said. “Growing up in Ohio, it has always been a dream of mine to coach in the Big Ten. When I met with the players, I was impressed with their excitement, competitive spirit, hunger and physical makeup. I am looking forward to bringing some juice to the defense and helping put IU on the national scene.” North Texas went 9-4 in 2013 with a victory in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Mean Green’s nine wins tied for the second-most in program history. Joseph coached 2013 All-Conference USA selections Marcus Trice and Lairamie Lee. The safeties had a hand in 15 turnovers, including eight interceptions, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Trice, a first team honoree, led UNT with five INTs (T-18th nationally), nine pass breakups and three blocked kicks (T-2nd nationally). He also finished second on the team with 90 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Among others, Joseph will be coaching rising sophomore Antonio Allen at safety. Lee picked off three passes, returned one for a touchdown, forced two fumbles and made two recoveries, and posted 74 stops with four TFLs. In 2012, Lee (72) and Trice (63) finished as the Mean Green’s fourth and fifth leading tacklers. Trice paced the team with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in addition to a pair of interceptions. Prior to his stint with North Texas, Joseph served as the co-defensive coordinator (2011), secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Montana State. In 2011, the Bobcats secondary was first in the Big Sky Conference in pass efficiency defense (18th nationally) and pass defense (22nd nationally). Montana State finished 27th in the country in total defense and recorded 44 sacks, which led the league and ranked seventh in the nation. Joseph helped transition all-conference safety Kevin Retoriano to cornerback during fall camp in 2009, then guided him to a second straight all-conference season. He also assisted Arnold Briggs make a similar move and earn a spot on the All-Big Sky second team. In each of his five seasons at Montana State, Joseph mentored a first or second team all-league defensive back. Joseph coached at Eastern Illinois University from 2003-06 and produced one of the top pass efficiency defenses in the nation in 2005. He also worked as a graduate assistant at Drake University (2000), Eastern Kentucky University (2001) and Iowa State University (2002). A former player at Drake, Joseph earned Academic All-Pioneer Football League honors and was captain of the 1998 team. Joseph holds the school record for longest interception return of 100 yards at Wayne (Neb.) State in 1997. Joseph received his degree from Drake in 1999 and a master’s degree from Iowa State in 2003.
