“Guys have had some of their dreams fulfilled and some of them denied,” McCarney said. “These guys are special. I love them and respect them so much. We would have loved to have played in postseason play and go back-to-back. Tonight was about these seniors and making sure we came out with a win.” McCarney handed his defensive coordinator John Skladany a well-deserved game ball after UNT’s defense didn’t give up any points in a win against FIU and the Mean Green’s players and coaches celebrated. Skladany is retiring at the end of the season. UNT wanted to send him out on a high note and did just that. “That was one of the great locker rooms at North Texas tonight,” McCarney said. DENTON Dan McCarney paused and his voice cracked Saturday night as the emotion welled up inside while he spoke about a relationship that has helped shape his career and his life. John Skladany has been McCarneys defensive coordinator and right-hand man for 13 years, 10 at Iowa State and the last three at North Texas, an era that will end with Skladanys impending retirement at the end of the season. That milestone drew closer after Skladany delivered a vintage performance in a 17-14 win over Florida International in the Mean Greens final home game of the season at Apogee Stadium. An opportunistic defense did its part to put FIU in position to win, but three turnovers committed by an offense stuck in reverse were too much to overcome in a 17-14 Conference USA loss to North Texas on Saturday. Mean Green kicker Trevor Moores 36-yard field goal late in the third quarter turned out to be plenty enough to send FIU to a fifth loss in its final six games. The Panthers, who ended their season 3-5 in the conference and 4-8 overall, failed to score an offensive touchdown while gaining only 147 yards from scrimmage. FIU quarterback Alex McGough was 11 for 25 for 56 yards and three interceptions, including one midway through the fourth quarter in the Mean Green end zone on the Panthers best scoring opportunity. Good game by the defense who pitched a shutout. Real proud of Derek Akunne who Mac compared to Zach Orr after the game (high praise). We were down two starting D-Linemen (Polk, Link) and yet we still got good pressure and fared well against their running game. Like someone else said it wasn't pretty, but it was a much needed win for the program. The UTSA fans are already saying they want to be able to say they are 2-0 against UNT so this final game is going to be important for us to get to 5 wins. Also shout out to the fans that dealt with the nasty weather to support the seniors. GMG
